News: Gary Bauer, Tanning Mom, Turtle, 'Jersey Shore'

1NewsIcon What a Tea Party take over of the Senate means: "Although divisive social issues have gotten little play this election year with many Republicans running on job creation and a stagnant economy, their election would usher in a majority that is just as conservative socially as it is fiscally."

BlueEtch1NewsIcon The Ohio Art Company is again capitalizing on the infamous "Romney is an Etch-a-Sketch" meme by releasing red and blue models of their famous product ahead of the election. The new tag line reads, "Exercise your freedom of expression".

1NewsIcon Unfortunately for the GOP, their ideological followers continue partaking in racist activities.

1NewsIcon Australian Gina Rinehart, the world's richest woman, told the "jealous" poor that they too can be rich - if they "spend less time drinking or smoking". That's offensive for a lot of different reasons.

1NewsIcon ABC filed a story on the start of the Internet Cat Film Festival under "bizarre news". Me-ow!

1NewsIcon On a related note: MTV has canceled Jersey Shore.

1NewsIcon The Film Experience guest blogger Melanie Lynskey got out actor Zachary Quinto to reflect on Il Postino. Writes Quinto: "I found myself alone at one of the only art house movie theaters in pittsburgh at the time. I was so enraptured by the experience. the tenderness and intimacy of the story. The beauty of the landscape. the powerful exploration of love. and in particular the performance of Massimo Troisi."

TanningMomXL1NewsIcon Perfectly awful or awfully perfect? Tanning Mom Patricia Krentcil was the guest of honor at gay NYC club XL's "hot mess" party last night.

1NewsIcon President Obama's "ask me anything" session briefly broke Reddit and brought us no closer to knowing the recipe for Obama's WH-made beer, though he claims the truth will be revealed soon. He did, however, suggest a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, the Supreme Court decision that gave rise to super PACs that now have massive influence on electoral politics.

1NewsIcon Has Lindsay Lohan convinced you yet that she can play Elizabeth Taylor? Maybe these shots from the set will help.

1NewsIcon The hateful groups Focus on the Family and the Alliance Defense Fund have put together a list of recommendations for bullying legislation. Not surprisingly, it benefits their ideological ilk: one of their suggestions says bullying laws "should not apply to 'religious, political, philosophical, or other protected student speech'. So basically any motivation that yields homophobia.

1NewsIcon Hunky GOP Rep. Aaron Schock thinks Paul Ryan needs to be shirtless more often. That's something on which we can probably all agree.

1NewsIcon Commandant Gen. James Amos, the head of the U.S. Marine Corps, says there have been no problems since Don't Ask, Don't Tell's repeal.

GaryBauerBlackandWhite1NewsIcon Former RNC Chairman Gary Bauer blasted Sen. Orrin Hatch for not supporting a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. "The goal of the gay rights movement is to take a state that has same-sex marriage and to use that state as a battering ram and a lawsuit before the Supreme Court to force every state to have same sex marriage," he said. "So I’m sorry that Orrin fell for it. But if only your side was willing to allow each state to make the decision on their own. I think Orrin Hatch may have had a bad moment or he forgets what’s happened in the last 30 years -- courts forcing radical social change on the American people."

1NewsIcon Adele did not have a secret wedding. Just an FYI.

1NewsIcon Just yesterday I asked a friend, "Where is Winona Ryder?" Here she is!

  1. I couldn't disagree more on Ryan's attractiveness. I grew up in WI, he looks like every other drunk I knew.

  2. WHEN exactly was Gary Bauer chairman of the RNC?? You ought to change that.

  3. Jesus Christ, Towleroad, enough with the posts about the perceived attractiveness of Paul Ryan. It's offensive. IS this a GOProud-leaning site? Sure seems like it lately.

  4. When Gen. Amos apologizes for his desperate attempts to torpedo DADT repeal by claiming that the Pentagon survey showed that Marines would be so distracted by out gays in their units that they might be mained or killed in battle when NOTHING about it said that THEN I might pay attention. Now he's simply repeating what everyone else has said for the last year [though I suspect we will eventually find out about some problems caused by the few recalitrant homohaters in the service].

  5. These grab bag summary posts are a waste of time. Whoever puts them together obviously doesn't care about the stories, as they're riddled with errors. Either a story is important enough for its own post, or you should ignore it. There's no point in just putting up an incorrect summary. In addition to the Gary Bauer mess-up, the Rhode Island post is completely wrong. The article referenced is only about seven sentences long, but the message was that House Speaker Fox stated that he was going to reintroduce the gay marriage bill early next year. Your summary stating that he keeps quiet on plans for marriage is the exact opposite of what the article said.

  6. I just visited the GOP.com website. I could find no reference to former leaders of the RNC. The only reference to Gary Bauer was real estate.

On a different note, GOP.com lists only three groups of Coalition Support: Blacks, Hispanics, and Women. No LGBT groups allowed?

  7. re: the AARON SCHOCK on Paul Ryan street interview -- didn't you love that he's walking in front of a gay underwear store, a rainbow flag, and a gay bathhouse???

    Posted by: Strepsi | Aug 30, 2012 5:45:07 PM

  8. Oops! I forgot to mention that the wikipedia biography of Gary Bauer does not mention any time at the RNC.

  9. Gary Bayer, scary inside & out. Is he using Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon for his nose?

  10. I jump every time I see that photo of Gary Bower. Why doesn't someone just give him back his Precious and let him go on his merry way?

  11. Sadly, I do find Paul Ryan physically attractive. And the reality is, that will make a difference in the election. Hopefully, though, the GQ ticket will go down in the merits.

    Posted by: David R. | Aug 30, 2012 6:21:54 PM

  12. OK, so my attractions won't make a big difference in November :-). What I meant was that since many people find Ryan attractive, the GQ ticket will get some bump.

    Posted by: David R. | Aug 30, 2012 6:30:38 PM

  13. Oh look, it's the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! Maybe Bauer says to himself "I smell secularist humanists...!"

Anyone who thinks Ryan is hot has pretty low standards, but the Repubs. need a few who are somewhat easy on the eyes to make up for the rest. Look at the convention attendees...mostly aging white men with fake blonde, fake boob wives...and a few Mittlerjugend and minorities for good measure.

  14. @Caliban. Thanks to your comment I laughed water out my nose.

  15. Is NOBODY going to comment on that over tanned, drunken piece of dried up Melba Toast at the Hot Mess Party? Those nasty panties were probably the ONLY thing holding up her naughty bits...! What a disgusting piece of work she turned out to be.

  16. "I think Orrin Hatch may have had a bad moment or he forgets what’s happened in the last 30 years -- courts forcing radical social change on the American people." You mean like enforcing Title VII? Your bigot is showing.

  18. There are various worth mentioning who unquestionably were known to be able to perhaps change its dining table time by employing most of these Rolex imitation designer watches. Along with the reason why don'tyou?
