NOM Teases Forthcoming Video of Dinner Debate Between Brian Brown and Dan Savage on New Website

The National Origanization for Marriage says it will soon post video of the dinner debate which Dan Savage challenged Brian Brown to in May of this year. The debate took place on August 15 at Savage's home in Seattle.

  1. Did not know this already happened, I look forward to it.

Well, I look forward to the UNEDITED video, which NOM will surely not show.

  2. What Cody said! If they're promoting it, they must have a heavily cut edition.

  3. From their site -- it's like a 14 year old edited the copy; it manages to get both capitalization and verb tense wrong in the same sentence... "When Brown heard about what Savage had said about Christians and the bible, and what he had said to high school students who were offended by what he did, Brown issues a challenge to Savage who accepted..."

  4. "...Brown issues a challenge to Savage to have a face-to-face debate about what the bible really says about gay marriage, which Savage accepted. "

We all know that NOM is a bunch of pansy-ass liars, but this is a glaring falsehood. Didn't Dan Savage take the initiative and issue the challenge to Mr. Brown?

God, if NOM is starting off the discussion around this video with stupid obvious lies like this, then I agree that they will heavily edit and twist the final video they post on their site

  5. I bet it sounds like a clip show. I doubt NOM would promote anything they didn't tailor edit to fit their agenda.

    Posted by: Polyboy | Aug 21, 2012 11:59:15 PM

  6. It's unedited

  7. @Leonard - I too thought the challenge came from Savage, not Brown, but actually NOM is correct.

Perhaps we were remembering this incorrectly because it was Savage who then challenged Brown to come to his home for the debate.

But I am shocked, SHOCKED, that NOM is so disrespectful to the Bible that they don't capitalize the B.

  8. Why are you shocked ?

It's not as though NOM really represents Christians...

  9. love the image they chose ;-)

i don't see how savage can come away looking anything less than successful in this.

it's literally impossible for The Other Side to make any form of claims that can non-hypocritically be backed up by faux-slavish adherence to scripture.

see also: the NOM brigade's big legal team coming up with nothing more than "B-b-b-but they're GAYYY!!" as their justification for Prop 8.

  10. I'm dumbfounded as how that moronic father thinks, "I did notice that he didn't say that the Qur'an was BS...." PARDON? Dan was discussing the BIBLE and America, not sure where the Qur'an fits in there.
However if I was Dan, I probably would not have cursed, it's not very becoming especially when you are trying to educate the young religious type.
However, if it was the religious right, if it was their own gathering, they would simply brush it off and claim free speech and how they have every right to say what ever they want and if it offends you, you don't believe in free speech.

  11. Hmmm - six days ago, and professional media wh*re Dan Savage hasn't been all over the place crowing about the debate -

sounds like Dan didn't do very well. After all, if he had, he'd have been putting the video up on the 16th.

  12. I am sure that Savage and Brown both have video copies of the debate. Hopefully we will get to see them and judge for ourselves who won the debate.

  13. I expect in NOM's copy every time Dan Savage speaks his lips won't match what he's saying and he'll sound just like Brain Brown.

  15. I have to hand it to Dan Savage. I couldn't stand to look at Brian Brown that long.

  16. I wonder if NOM will hold true to the 'non editing' clause of the dinner.

  17. I does believes he misspelt "the bibble"

  18. Horrible graphic design; they didn't get anything right. And who is the piranha in the middle, and why is the chair next to her so important?

  19. To be a fly on the wall, my dears...or, better still, a flea in Brian's ear.

  20. NOM will think they won whatever the real outcome, they are deluded and dont care about any argument that doesnt agree with their interpretation of the Bible, whether its true or not.

  21. Why has Dan Savage not posted this ?
Is this a sign that he screwed up ?
    I sure hope not.
And for phuck's sake, let's get over the capitalization non issue !

  22. I tend to agree with those who suggest that perhaps given NOM is promoting the video on their website and Savage has kept silent (which is NOT in keeping with his image) that maybe things didn't go so well for Savage...not a fan personally.

  23. Dan Savage was on vacation out of the U.S. for a couple of weeks and apparently had Brown over for this debate shortly after coming home, but he's not back at work yet. He's been posting old columns on Slog with a disclaimer that reads: "I'm on hiatus while working on a manuscript for a new book. In the meantime, please enjoy these classic Savage Love letters pulled from previous columns. I will be back October 1st, when the book is finished."

I am hoping he hasn't posted it yet because of his publishing deadline, rather than that it didn't go well.

  24. Some of us were saying a few months ago that this was a bad idea. (Candide, where are you?) The issue is you need the right person to respond to their Buy-Bull-blical gobbledygook. Unfortunately, in a debate, saying "what you're arguing from is a fairy tale" isn't a particularly effective rhetorical device. If Brian just regurgitates the right verses - he wins for their side. That could be why they are so anxious to post the video. If Dan merely says he doesn't believe the Bible - that's not an effective response. You need someone who can address the historicity of various parts of the Bible and criticize its various internal well as having to social science background and/or historical knowledge to debunk the precious assumptions of the Christianists. (for example: that Christian theocracies were sin-free. They were not: in puritan New England, there was rape, unwed teen pregnancy, mass murder, you name it. All the ills of the modern world. This is covered in the book "The Midwife's Tale" by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.)
