Obama Ad Calls Romney Out on His Automotive Industry Lies: VIDEO

Detroit

Mitt Romney put out an ad implying that Chrysler is moving U.S. jobs to China.

Writes Business Insider:

The claim is completely misleading and false, and provoked an outcry from Democrats and reporters . The report, from Bloomberg, actually said that Chrysler is talking about adding Jeep production in China in order to serve the Chinese market. Jeep production in North America would continue unchanged.

The claim is completely misleading and false, and provoked an outcry from Democrats and reporters . The report, from Bloomberg, actually said that Chrysler is talking about adding Jeep production in China in order to serve the Chinese market. Jeep production in North America would continue unchanged.

But despite the fact that Romney's claim was demonstrably wrong, his campaign is doubling down in the new ad, which went on air this weekend in Ohio.

The Obama campaign fires back at Romney's "lie" with a new ad.

When the auto industry faced collapse, Mitt Romney turned his back. Even the conservative Detroit News criticized Romney for his 'wrong-headedness' on the bailout. And now, after Romney's false claim of Jeep outsourcing to China, Chrysler itself has refuted Romney's lie. The truth? Jeep is adding jobs in Ohio.

Watch both, AFTER THE JUMP...

  2. If lying is a sin then Mitt Romney’s Magic Mormon Underpants are on FIRE! How can any intelligent American vote for a man clouded in secrecy who habitually bends the truth? Income inequality is endangering the Middle Class and making paupers of us all who don’t have those millions upon millions of dollars. Read more about the role of Romney’s riches in this election and the power of his sacred undergarments at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/05/mitt-romneys-magic-mormon-underwear.html The working class of our country can’t AFFORD to allow this election to be bought and sold!

  3. Lying is not a sin in the Mormon Church; it's an asset, as Mitt so consistently proves. Small wonder he's as rich as a king.

  5. Thank God that Obama is finally getting the truth out about Romney's flip-flops. I also can't wait for Politifact to scream.

  6. Wrong

You seemed to have forgotten the very first paragraph Bloomberg put up.

    Here, I'll help you remember.

"Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region."

So no, it wasn't a lie at all.

  7. From an LDS website about teaching Mormon values:
"Discuss how easy it is to tell a lie. Point out that some lies seem bigger than others, but even the smallest lie is a sin.

Read Doctrine and Covenants 42:21 to show how serious a sin lying is. Be sure the members of your family understand that they can repent of any lies they may have already told. Encourage them to watch for situations where they might be tempted to lie, and to be sure they choose to tell the truth."

  8. @MIKE: This is in reference to making Jeeps in China for the Chinese market. Please read the REST of the article:

"Manley referred to adding Jeep production sites rather than shifting output from North America to China."

So, apparently it was a lie. I know you Gop'ers have had a long history of twisting the truth. Romney was wrong. You are wrong. Btw Romney is the last person who should pretend to be protecting workers from outsourcing to China. Like, come on!

  9. I'm a native Michigander with a lot of family in northern Ohio, and you'd better believe that the Romney rhetoric about Detroit and the auto industry will not be forgotten a week from tomorrow. If Romney loses Ohio, it's because of losing the blue collar vote.

  13. Too bad Romney can't even keep his lies straight about bail-out vs bankruptcy.

@Greggo: Google "lying for the Lord". I have been told by ex-LDS that's exactly what they were taught.

  14. Romney ended up lying because he drank the right wing kool-aid, repeating crap published on wingnut sites:
"Romney apparently was referencing conservative bloggers who misrepresented a Bloomberg story from Monday that discussed Chrysler’s decision to consider starting Jeep production in China, the world’s largest new-vehicle market."
Even if he didn't INTEND to lie, he's just proven himself utterly unqualified to hold the post of US president.

  15. The rains from the Sandy hurricane have not ceased falling and the POTUS has already declared 8 states and the District of Columbia to be disaster areas eligible for federal rescue funding. He dropped the campaign and immediately started doing the work required of the Chief Executive officer of the United States government. Way to go Mr. Obama.

  16. Where are the food and water trucks provided by the Romneys and their sons. There should be at least 2 million dollars in food and water donations on its way to stricken areas to aid the elderly, young children, and families out of their homes. Surely five strapping boys and their families can get a truck load of food together for flood victims with young children who are hungry.

  17. Are the no Romneys that are smart enough to have bottled water and sandwiches available for the masses tomorrow. There will be people needing food and water while working the fallen trees and logs and blocked streets. There will be children needing food, sandwiches, burgers, rollups. Where are the trucks bringing ice, water, .Did they make the mistake that no one would need food.

FEED THE CHILDREN SAVE THE CHILDREN HELP THE KIDDIESS. WATER THE KIDS.

  18. @MIKE: from the Toledo Blade (the home of Jeep):

"The ad also alludes to The Detroit News, which endorsed Mr. Romney, as criticizing his "wrongheadedness on the auto bailout." It then says the truth is that "Chrysler is adding jobs in Ohio," quoting a Blade article reporting plans to hire 1,100 new workers for the Toledo operation.

Mr. Romney last Thursday told a crowd of 12,000 people at a rally in Defiance that, "“I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China. I will fight for every good job in America, I’m going to fight to make sure trade is fair.”

Chrysler quickly released a statement that the report was inaccurate, but rated accurate a story from Bloomberg News three days earlier reporting that Fiat plans to resume building Jeeps in China to sell in the Chinese market."

Mike, would you like some crow for dinner?

  21. The Washington Post Fact Checker has declared that Mitt Romney's television ad about Jeep production being moved overseas, which has "hurt" the "feelings" of the Obama campaign and the left, is "factually defensible" and "technically correct."

    Posted by: anon | Oct 30, 2012 1:38:12 PM

  22. Actually ANON you are wrong! From the very article you just mentioned. Where does it say "factually defensible"?

    Headline:
"Four Pinocchios for Romney’s Jeep ad"

"The Fact Checker weighs in on Mitt Romney’s controversial new ad in Ohio:

This ad shows that we have entered the final, desperate week of the campaign.

The series of statements in the ad individually may be technically correct, but the overall message of the ad is clearly misleading — especially since it appears to have been designed to piggyback off of Romney’s gross misstatement that Chrysler was moving Ohio factory jobs to China."

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/10/30/four-pinocchios-for-romneys-jeep-ad/

    -

While he is technically correct that they are going to produce Jeeps in China, IT IS FOR THE CHINESE MARKET. They ARE NOT outsourcing to China. They are in fact, ADDING JOBS AT JEEP IN TOLEDO (see the Toledo Blade article above or google it). Chrylser has said MITT ROMNEY IS WRONG.

    STOP THE LIES!

  23. You should hear how some Republitrolls on other sites are trying so hard to counter-spin this one, even going as far as blaming Obama for sending GM's jobs to China instead of building them here. Because obviously, Obama controls GM and it makes much more sense to make Jeeps for the Chinese market in the US and ship them to China instead of actually building them in China. *rolls eyes*

    Posted by: FuryOfFirestorm | Oct 30, 2012 2:00:55 PM

  24. Ah yes, the same Republicans who didn't give a crap about the Domestic 3 when two of them were about to go out of business back in 2007. Now they are suddenly sticking up for the same union workers they tore down as the fall guy. How transparent! Nice try guys!

  25. From the Detroit Free Press:

"Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said no U.S. production of Jeep vehicles will be moved to China and U.S. production of Jeeps “will constitute the backbone of the brand,” in an e-mail to employees five days after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney repeated a false report that suggested Jeep production could be moved to China."

"Without citing Romney by name, Marchionne said Chrysler remains committed to “investing to improve and expand our entire U.S. operations, including our Jeep facilities,” according to a company e-mail obtained by the Free Press."

“It is inaccurate to suggest anything different,” Marchionne said.

"In his company email, Marchionne confirmed the company’s previous statements that it plans to eventually restart vehicle production in China because the market “would not otherwise be accessible” without making vehicles there. Chinese regulations make it very difficult to import foreign vehicles."
