Beyond reminding people of his leadership qualities, which are substantial, Sandy should serve as a wake up call to anyone who was starting to think that in a country of 300 million people you can have a cogent small federal government philosophy. Most people in this country live in major conurbations that span city, county, and even state boundaries, with little regional government. And most of the disasters we will face are simply not the kind that are best dealt with by local governments, state governments or the private sector. In the wake of Sandy, remember that Romney wants each of these states to go it mostly alone with some help from a private sector that has no obligation to offer assistance. But hey, if we want a bunch of Haliburtons helping us respond to and rebuild after these kinds of events, then at least he’ll have another set of companies for his portfolio.
