Will Obama And Romney 'Go Purple' To Support LGBT Youth?

Purple2012_600x225

This coming Friday is Spirit Day, a day on which people are meant to wear purple to support LGBT people who are bullied. As millions prepare to participate, 17-year old Katy Butler, one of the people instrumental in getting the MPAA to change the rating for the pro-equality flick Bully, is asking that President Obama and Mitt Romney don purple garb to show their commitment to ending bullying.

From her new Change.org petition:

If both of these influential men participate by simply wearing purple it will show LGBT teens like me that there are powerful people who care about us. I know what it’s like to feel alone, and seeing two of our country's political leaders show that they care about our lives could make a huge difference to. LGBT students, who are 3-5 times more likely to experience depression and attempt suicide than their counter parts. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney could take a big step towards ending that feeling of isolation.

So, what are the odds that the men will heed Butler's call?

everyone should do it. it's rather amazing to see the response this incredibly simple, yet powerful, visual statement makes.

the look of recognition from one purple-wearer to another, and the youth who see it all around.

don't underestimate the power of iconography.

  3. Why would Mitt Romney wear purple anyways? some people just give others too much credit.

  4. While I think this is a great project overall, I think Romney's wearing of purple would be opportunistic to once again look like a moderate. He is the one who said that he prevented Massachusetts from becoming "the Las Vegas of gay marriage." These are hurtful comments, and I don't think he should get any credit for wearing purple.

  5. Romney IS a bully who organized the gang that held-down and shorn the hair of a gay boy at his prep school (and now claims not to remember it), so....

  7. Romney is an opportunist. He can put on a purple necktie -- if Spirit Day gets a lot of support, he can say something bland in opposition to bullying. If it doesn't, he can say that Ann thought the tie would bring out his eye color.
