Russian Court Tosses Madonna 'Gay Propaganda' Suit

Here's an extra thing to be thankful for this year, Madonna fans: a Russian court threw out an anti-gay group's $10 million lawsuit against the singer, whom they accused of "corrupting" Russian youth and threatening the nation's birthrate by celebrating LGBT equality at a St. Petersburg concert in August.

And the AP reports that the one-day hearing "bordered on the farcical:"

The ruling came after a one-day hearing that bordered on the farcical. During it, plaintiffs claimed that Madonna's so-called "propaganda of perversion" would negatively affect Russia's birthrate and erode the nation's defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers. At one point, the judge threatened to expel journalists from the courtroom if they laughed too much.

Despite the ruling, the anti-gay activists who brought the suit still think Madonna deserves to be punished. "We believe there was a case of the breach of law, namely gay propaganda among minors," said Darya Dedova.

Madonna, one has to guess, couldn't care less.

  4. It's almost unbelievable that the Russian Orthodox Church has regained so much authority in Russia, that it can mount an offensive against gays and trot out the tired old LIE that gays are a threat to children. But the historical precedent goes back to John Chrysostom, an early church leader, who opined and ruled that sodomy was worse than murder, "The murderer dissevers the soul from the body, but (the sodomite) ruins the soul with the body...For I should not only say thou has become a woman, but that thou hast lost thy manhood." Chrysostom was also a verbally vicious anti-semite.

  5. Pack it up Granny. Lady Gaga is the Current Queen of Pop. She is selling out shows while Madge is playing empty stadiums. And while you are at it, take the jungle monkey Rihanna with you.

  6. So yep, Russia is culturally and socially at the same level of Uganda.

  7. Felix, i don't think so. Russia is not in a good place, but at least its ahead of Uganda.
The journalist laugh out loud at the ridiculous lawsuit, and it didn't progressed on court. So at least there's a few people there who don't lose their senses

  8. Joey... you are free to like whomever you like in your musical tastes. That doesn't give you the right to tell others whom they are allowed to like or to decide when people should end their careers to suit your personal wishes. Nor does it give you a free pass on your racism (jungle monkey? seriously?) and ageism (Madonna is actually NOT a grandmother). Let's think of it this way. You wanting to enforce your opinions and tastes about music on others is NO DIFFERENT than straight homophobes trying to enforce their tastes and opinions about sexuality on us. It's called freedom... it you want to be free you need others to be free, too. So please, STFU. Thanks.

As for the pose of the photo... it's PERFECT. It's a KISS MY ASS pose to the idiots who filed their "farcical" suit in the first place. We win, they lose. AWESOME! Thanks, Madonna, for having the guts to speak up for us in a very oppressive country.

  9. Ugh. Seachange in progress. Whilst channel surfing, I just had to decide on whether to watch LSU v. Arkansas (yawn) or Madge on Ellen (meh). I must be sprouting rainbow wings because I chose Madge. But she's so tediously uninteresting and unsexy and pretentious and patronizing and condescending. Boring, boring, boring.

And that ass pic? Tired ol' granny ass doesn't do it anywhere outside Sunny Acres resthome. Cover it up, Old Lady. Nobody wants to see it.

  10. I hope Russia will stabilize and become a modern western-style nation with rule of law, not of a neo-czar like Putin. Russia and the world would be far better for it.

  11. Couldn't she have easily 1-upped them by filing a suit for so-called "authorities" recording copyrighted audio & video illegally during the concert?

  13. Does Russian law work the same way most western courts do? Could this set a precedent that this law is basically unenforceable?
