  1. Omg. I got to hear Adam sing this accompanied by only a piano when he appeared for the sick children at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. Having his voice bounce off me was such a visceral, beautiful thing. I could tell he was holding back so much, and only let it out a bit more toward the end. It would have been like getting hit by a firehose if he had, I'm sure.
And do I need to say that seeing him deal with injured and sick children left not a dry eye in the atrium? He made them very happy that day.
    Keep it going, Adam.

  3. First time I ever heard Mad World was watching Donnie Darko (don't judge). After hearing versions by Tears for Fears and Gary Jules -- both marvelous -- I can comfortably say THIS is my new favorite version.

Much as I can respect his accomplishments and still think he should've won Idol, I've never been particularly an Adam Lambert fan. But the boy definitely surprised me with this duet. It takes all kinds of performance maturity for someone with such a big voice to play right up to Cyndi's vocals without overpowering them. This was gorgeous.

  4. Can someone get them into a studio to record this? It's a great cover of the song and it would be a shame that it is never well recorded.

  5. Why does Andy Cohen have to weasel his way into everything? He's EVERYWHERE. So annoying.

Cyndi and Adam were great though!

  11. Oh, yes... before I forget it... Andy Cohen you're a cheap, shallow, vacuous fame-whore. Get back under that rock.

  12. "If you want to know why Madonna made it big and Cyndi didn't even thogh Cyndi was the real singer....read Her Memoir....Very cool book!"

So why did Madonna become big and Cyndi didn't? That mystery has baffled me since the 1980s. I never could stand Madonna and Cyndi by far has the better singing voice.

  13. I was the world's biggest Adam Lambert fan back on American Idol. Now unleashed, his music is great, but the ludicrous wardrobe choices he continues to make, far from looking hip, make him look like a clown and probably don't do him any favors career wise. It makes him seem like even more of a freak. What's with the stupid platform shoes, the way overdone makeup, the awkward facial hair, the never the same Bob's Big Boy hairstyle? We came for the music, not the outfits. His talent doesn't need these stupid fashion gimmicks. He's a great looking guy but manages to repeatedly destroy it.

  14. love Madonna love Cyndi love Andy getting used to Adam--he can be too much vocally for me, this showed some restraint
TalkAmongstYourselves: there doesn't have to be a winner, folks, it's art--don't let the Simon's & the ESPN "champion" mentality dictate our entertainment enjoyment, something for everyone & everybody?!

  18. @Jim. Totally disagree. Adam always looks amazing. We came for everything and he always, ALWAYS delivers. It's all rock n roll and unfortunately you just don't get it.

  19. Saint Cyndi...

I gave up on AI years and years ago. Mr. Lambert shows himself to be an amazing entertainer here. Subtlety in the face of Ms. Lauper's pipes, stunning.

  21. Mikeflower: Cyndi's not out because she's not gay. Her sister is, and she's been 1000% supportive of her sister and the rest of us. With the balls she has, if she were a church member I've no doubt she'd be in your face about it.

I saw her open for the Cher Farewell Tour (I forget which iteration... maybe the second?) She sang "True Colors" with acoustic accompaniment, and held her fist in the air for the last verse. I couldn't cheer because I was that choked up... and I don't ever choke up. She is and always will be badass ACES in my book.

  22. OK, I adore Cyndi and Adam is... well, fine... not my thing but he certainly has done well for himself. I like a few of the songs. And hey... good for him. Not dogging him at all.

But on top of how bizarre a pairing it is... this is NOT a song Adam should sing. He's a belter. Cyndi can whisper sing and make it sound like the most vulnerable and delicate thing... he can't. This isn't a song that should have all those wailing high notes. This is a song that should be sung like a crying whisper. It's a melodic suicide note. It's not a song for hitting the high C.

  23. Why did Madonna succeed where Cyndi failed? It has nothing to do with the voice and everything to do with marketing.

Madonna had an amazing skill of riding a trend and then knowing when to change her image. She got the timing right and moved on before people expected it. She continued to find ways to provoke reactions and to shock.

Cyndi has the better voice, unquestionably. But she had a hard time transitioning from "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," to her next recordings. In fact, "Girls" was such a monster hit, it simply defined her and she never found a way to re-invent herself as Madonna did.

Blame management, not talent. And, yes, sometimes life isn't fair.
