More From The Log Cabin Republicans On Chuck Hagel's 'Sincerity'

Some are wondering why the Log Cabin Republicans suddenly decided yesterday to run a full-page ad taking on potential Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel.

After all, it was only two weeks ago that LCR's outgoing executive director, R. Clarke Cooper, told Andy Humm at Gay City News that despite the criticism of Hagel's 1998 comments about Ambassador James Hormel being "aggressively gay," his foreign policy and combat experience made him a good candidate for Leon Panetta's position.

"It is well worth noting that Senator Hagel is a combat veteran who has hands-on experience in the field. The battlefield is not just theory for him," Cooper said at the time. Though he was speaking for himself and not for LCR, it sounded like something of an endorsement from the gay Republican group. Yesterday's ad made clear that's not the case.

While Cooper would explain why his comments are so strikingly different, he told Humm yesterday that this ad "was not just about an old confirmation hearing."

"Chuck Hagel’s weak record on preventing nuclear proliferation in Iran, lack of confidence in our ally Israel as well as an aggressive history against the LGBT community is a negative combination for a secretary of defense nominee," he said in an email. "While he may have recently apologized for his anti-gay comments to save his possible nomination, Hagel cannot walk away from his consistent record against economic sanctions to try to change the behavior of the Islamist radical regime in Tehran."

Meanwhile, asked by BuzzFeed about Hormel's initial assessment of Hagel's apology, that it was done with political expediency, not healing, in mind, Cooper remarked, "Log Cabin Republicans concur with Ambassador Hormel's original assessment of Chuck Hagel's current position on gay rights. We question the sincerity of it."

  1. If they're against him, I'm for him. Hagel's apologized for his stupid anti-gay remarks. He's got a much more intelligent view on dealing with Iran. And, he's right. Congress and DC in general are controlled by Israel, Inc.

The LCR are still a bunch of butt-boy fairy twits who should sit down and shut the hell up.

  2. Funny that LCR was able to endorse Romney for President despite his current opposition to gay equality but Hagel's 14 year-old remarks suddenly disqualify him. If Hagel was gung-ho to bomb the entire Middle East LCR would be more than happy to forgive him any anti-gay statements from his past (or present).

  3. I am not a fan of LCR at all and this just proves their lack of logic and rationality; I am not quite sure if Hagel is a homophobe or not and why LCR is going so strongly after them and yet, Romney is a homophobe and just not a nice person, got their vote of approval and support

  4. I am so sick of the Log Cabin Republican idiots ! Why the hell do we keep giving them free publicity ? WE are the reason they keep going. WE are helping them by constantly reporting about them.

They speak out against Hagel because of his stance on gays (for which he has since apologized) but they endorsed Romney who was way more anti-gay than Hagel and for which Romney has still not apologized.

WTF is wrong with these self haters ? Just how stupid do you have to be to be a Log Cabin Republican ? There are not enough words to describe their absolute stupidity. Morons, morons, morons.

These attention-seeking cun#s are one of the reasons we have no legal rights. If they didn't get any publicity they would have no power. Let's make a pact to completely ignore them.

  6. Note the anti-gay bating, presumably to trick tea partiers - how shameful. The ad could easily be read to assume Hagel favored gay rights.

  7. The only republican that the Log Cabin folks don't like is Chuck Hagel, the wounded warrior who put his life on the line to serve our nation and opposes the "chicken hawk" neo cons who think that military intervention is always at the top of the list of responses. They disguist me!!!!!

  8. In one sense it shouldn't matter if he is anti-gay. As a military man, he should follow the chain-of-command and take his lead from the commander-in-chief, just like the rest of the armed services have already done.

One other consideration about his "expedient" apology. Has he really had an appropriate opportunity to express his revised views? Why would he issue a press release without some issue which would compel his response?
