"Advertisements are usually placed days before the newspaper lands on your doorstep. In this case, the advertisement in question was placed Thursday morning," wrote editor Paul Osmundson. "But we at The Herald should have recognized the unfortunate juxtaposition of the advertisement with stories and a photograph about gun violence."

1NewsIcon In the wake of the Connecticut shooting, Fox is airing repeats of Family Guy and American Dad tonight instead of new episodes that contain "possibly sensitive material."

1NewsIcon From author Liza Long's piece on raising and caring for a mentally ill and potentially dangerous son, "I Am Adam Lanza's Mother": "No one wants to send a 13-year-old genius who loves Harry Potter and his snuggle animal collection to jail But our society, with its stigma on mental illness and its broken healthcare system, does not provide us with other options. Then another tortured soul shoots up a fast food restaurant. A mall. A kindergarten classroom. And we wring our hands and say, 'Something must be done.'"

1NewsIcon Sen. Dianne Feinstein says she plans to introduce an assault weapons ban next month. "It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation, and the possession. Not retroactively, but prospectively. It will ban the same for big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets," she said. "There will be a bill."

Brainscan1NewsIcon The U.S. Army's experiments in chemistry: "In 1953, a catastrophic amount of EA 1298—a version of mescaline—had been injected into a patient named Harold Blauer, who had a violent reaction: shock, coma, and then death. Like a factory churning out products of inconsistent sizes, ejaculates with varying sperm lengths can be a problem, said James Mossman of Brown University in Rhode Island."

  1. From personal experience I know it's difficult to deal with mentally ill relative- but at the same time was it really a good idea for Lanza's mother to keep gun in her house?!

  2. The White House is not in the business of designating hate groups. The FBI may investigate an organization as a hate group in its opinion, but you aren't going to hear much about it ahead of time.

  3. Totally agree with Melvin. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the FBI already keeps close tabs on the Westboro Baptist Church. Other than that, what do they want the White House to do? Do we really want the White House to go back to keeping "Enemies Lists"? And what should happen to groups or individuals on said list?

  4. I'm pretty sure you mean "Broadway legend and Homeland actor Mandy Patinkin..."

  5. That Liza Long piece is misleading, dangerous and harmful to those with the disability of Asperger's syndrome or autism.

    THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH ASPERGER'S SYNDROME OR AUTISM ARE MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT VIOLENCE.

    Thank goodness Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been screaming this from the mountain top at CNN.

    Some mothers of children with disabilities need attention, because they are under stress and have a lot to cope with. So, they write ridiculous stories about their own child and others with similar disabilities being like a mass-murderer.

    In the CT shooter case, he was schooled in guns and shooting by his crackpot survivalist mother whom he shot in the face.

    Tragic, but not a cause for making unfair and harmful generalizations about others with Asperger's syndrome or autism.

  6. *Lanza did not use a 'high powered' rifle to kill; it was left locked in the trunk of the car.

    *Federal authorities after searching logs at local gun ranges have found no evidence Nancy Lanza or her sons ever used their ranges. Operators of the ranges can't remember seeing her or any of her sons.

    ==================

    1) Why was this DERANGED woman left in charge and given legal custody of Adam Lanza?

    2) How can a father and only brother, both whom physically live close to Newtown,CT [Stamford,CT and NJ/NYC] be 'Estranged' from their teenage-20 year old son/only brother? His only brother hadn't had any contact with him since 2010? Not even on holidays? I find that quite strange.

    3) If this lunatic woman, Nancy Lanza, was deliberately keeping Adam Lanza away from other family, including his father and only brother, and isolating him with her in a mansion of a house, WHY didn't at least his father Peter Lanza make a serious attempt[s] to get access to his 'Disturbed' but brilliant son? WHY didn't he go back to court and demand legal access or even attempt to take custody away from his crazy ex-wife?

    No one really knows what Lanza's problem[s] really were, because there's been no hard evidence form any professional to come forward. No hospital reports or medical reports of any kind. His brother said he has a 'Personality Disorder'; how did his brother know this? Did a mental health professional [after extensive tests, of course] tell him this or is it just his layman's opinion? If he was professionally diagnosed being Autistic [including Aspergers], why was he allowed to be withdrawn from school and isolated with his mom when the exact opposite should have occurred? He should have been in a social environment in order to help him become properly socialized and to not become even more withdrawn. Why did his father allow this?

    ===================

    CT has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. In fact, Adam Lanza attempted to legally buy firearms a few weeks before the shooting in Danbury, but left empty handed because he didn't want to go through the background check. And where did he get the kind of $ to but expensive firearms and ammo?

    ====================

    VIDEO GAMES: This guy was an obsessive violent game player. More than any other type of media, more than movies, TV shows, books, music, etc., these uber violent video games have a major psychological impact on the especially young adults and kids who play them. And what makes them worse than the other types of violent media and imagery we're inundated with is games are INTERACTIVE. No one will convince me that these uber violent video games don't have a highly negative impact on society as a whole. But of course some people make lots of $ from them, and we all know it all comes down to $. Just like the Pharmaceutical Industry makes HUGE $ from shilling highly dubious cr*p, especially psychotropic drugs to especially vulnerable kids and young adults. But like everything, to get to the real truth, you must follow the $ trail.

    ====================

    My own opinion is evolving, and this Adam Lanza character is looking more and more like a very spoiled and privileged brat, in addition to having some serious mental health issues. Always a lethal combination.

    We have to do far better with dealing with mental health issues in this country. And other comparable western countries are no better.

  7. About the Indiana poll,It is more important to realize that 53% Are AGAINST state constitution amendment banning gay marriage and only 42 are in favor of it.

  8. With huge public support now the Westboro group will soon be under sufficient "surveillance" so that the President can push a doomsday button and send them all to hell. That's what I want.
