Log Cabin Head Tries To Explain Hagel Opposition On Fox News: VIDEO

Another day, another story about Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel. Today's tale, or the first one of today, there will probably be more, is about interim Log Cabin Republican leader Gregory T. Angelo discussing the group's opposition with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.

So, why does the gay GOP group oppose Hagel? "Because we're Republican," says Angelo, as if there's an unspoken rule all Republicans must agree on all things at all times.

O'Reilly also asked Angelo whether a potential cabinet official who opposes homosexuality for religious reasons should be disqualified, to which Angelo responded, "We don't have a litmus test." He also talked up his group's new advertisement in The Hill.

Meanwhile, JK Trotter at The Atlantic Wire wrote a story called "Chuck Hagel's Evolution on Gay Rights Is Tearing the Log Cabin Republicans Apart," and it goes a little something like this: "Of the many reactions to Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel's comments about an ambassador nominee being 'aggressively gay'... by far the most vexing, and internally divisive, stem from the Log Cabin Republicans." If there's one lesson to be learned from this whole Hagel thing it is that opportunism is alive and well in America.

Watch O'Reilly and Angelo talk Hagel and homosexuality AFTER THE JUMP.

  1. An LCR going on Faux News to protest an anti-day candidate? It's like a fat hen going to the foxhouse to squawk about how chickens are treated. What a sad joke.

  2. Sorry, meant anti-gay.

    Posted by: Jack M | Jan 10, 2013 8:42:02 AM

  3. Didn't Hagel use the phrase, "aggressively", not "flamboyantly"....that's a misquote. Intentional perhaps?

And are the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence anti-Catholic? Implying they want to eliminate the Catholic that true?

  4. Instead of attacking Log Cabin, shouldn't we be going after Hagel? Log Cabin is not the enemy.

  5. "Log Cabin is not the enemy."

They endorsed Mitt Romney for president. With friends like that...

  6. I don't think I would consider the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to be militant.

  7. Hagel made an anti-gay comment in the 90s. He has pledged that he has learned from it and wants to do better. I have friends and family that made anti-gay comments in the 90s and I have forgiven them because they know better now. MOVE ON

  8. Dastius,

Then your interest in gay rights is political. Put politics aside and accept that Log Cabin is right on some issues.

Posted by: stephen lucas | Jan 10, 2013 9:47:08 AM

  9. Sorry Stephen, but Log Cabin is the enemy. they were 100% perfectly content to let Mitt Romney endorse constitutional changes that would forever deny gay people rights. They are self-loathing sniveling little weasels who are only interested in protecting their trust funds

  10. "Then your interest in gay rights is political. Put politics aside"

Stephen, gay rights IS a political issue. Log Cabin Republicans is a political entity, hence the inclusion of the word "Republicans" in the name.

  12. hate to be so superficial (ha!) but that guy (appearance, demeanor...) is really the definition of milquetoast. And then he opens his mouth and out comes the frothy stuff.

  13. Hugo : I don't mind that you said that, but...let's see if the towleroadies are consistent and start calling that a self-hating statement (despite who you said it about).

  14. Hagel is an easy target because many Republicans oppose him for other reasons. They don't have the guts to go after Boner who is much worse on gay rights.

  15. Why do gay republicans always look like unhappy rabbits?

    Posted by: KevinSF | Jan 10, 2013 10:20:53 AM

  16. Like Barney Frank said

seeing who is attacking him, I now support Hagel

The repubs and log cabinites should have remained silent, their hyperventilating has had the opposite reaction than their intention and boosted Hagel

  17. KEVINSF: "Because they are, my dear." That's an "All About Eve" quote.

  19. Gregory T. Angelo, the head of Log Cabin Republicans on Fox Views complaining to Mr. O'Reilly, someone that has continually and clearly opposed gay rights, same-sex marriage and adoption rights, to condemn a fellow Republican Senator that made statements over 20 years ago against the homos and has since rescinded those statements .

These American homo Republicans are daf.
It's like a cow going to McDonalds to complain about the local fish shop for serving 10 hamburgers a week.

    Complete madness.

  20. What laughable political theater. They oppose him because he was nominated by Obama. They don't give 2 sh-ts about what he said in the 1990s.

    Posted by: EchtKultig | Jan 10, 2013 11:54:26 AM

  21. We have to look at the totality of his record... We can't risk rolling the dice with Hagel but we could with Romney?

Can we just get rid of Angelo?

Posted by: Diogenes Arktos | Jan 10, 2013 12:14:50 PM

  22. he looks like a muppet.

    and acts like one.

"Well, when we heard that the Black Liberal President wanted him we thought this would be a great opportunity to show our anti-gay white families how dedicated we are to opposing anything done by blacks and liberals"

    there. in a nutshell.

  23. LCR is the enemy they back people who want to take away any gains in LGBT rights. They backed a presidential who sponsor a marriage amendment and end the marriages of gay people.LCR belongs to a party who rather see us in jails or hospitalss than as productive happy citizens. So tellme again that LCR isn't the enemy.

  24. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do not want to "eliminate" the Catholic Church; neither are they "anti-Catholic". They are practitioners of the art of "guerrilla street-theatre", which they do quite well. There was a time when TSPI worked with several groups of traditional, Catholic nuns on many a charitable cause in S.F.

The LCR should just sit down and shut the hell up.

  25. Hugo : LOL. Nope, nobody took you to task for calling that gay man frothy and milquetoast. I guess it depends who you're insulting before they start calling you a self-hating gay.
