Madonna To Honor Anderson Cooper At GLAAD Media Awards

MadgecooperMadonna will be in the house at 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards March 16th, when the queen of pop will present journalist Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award for his tireless work toward full equality.

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement, "By sharing his own experiences as a gay man, Anderson has reminded millions of Americans that LGBT people are part of their everyday lives and an integral part of our cultural fabric. He continues to raise the bar and set a new standard for journalists everywhere, and I'm proud to call him a friend."

Despite all his wonderful work, Cooper may very well be upstaged by Madonna, who has been fighting discrimination, ignorance and hate for years and whose presence will GLAAD, Cooper and hosts Lara Spencer, Josh Elliott, and Sam Champion get their point across. If anyone can make people pay attention, it's Madonna. She takes no prisoners.

"From speaking out against bullying to raising support for marriage equality, Madonna has always been one of our community's strongest allies. We are honored to have her stand with GLAAD and Anderson Cooper," said Graddick.

Cooper will receive his award on March 16 in New York City.

  1. Kudos!

And while some will carp and say "he came out too late", or something, let's try to remember that THAT is just as important a party of this, and our collective, story.

we were all Closeted once, to varying degrees, and the factors and fears that kept us there need to be shared and shared and shared.

    well met, Coop.

  2. She could probably take him...

  3. Nothing will upstage the reason for the award: full equality, no one is more important than that.

  4. Oh no.

    Jerks!

  6. i find this need of celebs to be constantly giving each other awards tedious and tiresome

  7. Go M. So proud of you.

  8. Would that be Josh Elliot from ABC or Josh Elliot from Bel-Ami? I'm rooting for the latter.

  9. It's the standard Hollywood rundown. Oh, he is just faabulous. And she is so wonderfull. Meanwhile, no one says anything about how corrupt the town is. None of these people would have made it through the door if they have one shred of integrity.
That said, no one better say one word against Madge or The Silver Fox.

  10. wilberforce, while i roll my eyes at those who paraphrase The Bard, yours truly was a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

do you have a point? methinks not. exeunt.

  11. Two multi-millionaires slapping each other on the back. And why Anderson? He was in the closet for 95% of his career, coming out only
towards the end of his career. What a role model...not.

As for Madonna, haven't we guys learnt our lesson yet? Fake female divas who use cashed-up gay men to build a personal empire worth many millions are not good for the gay community. They chew us and spit us out. They also get in the way of gay male progress on the music charts.

  12. With Lady Gaga out of commission, Madonna can seize the gay spotlight by honor by honoring a coward who stayed in the closet too long. At least he's a Vanderbilt.

  13. "the Vito Russo Award for his tireless work toward full equality."

I like Anderson Cooper and think he seems like a great guy. But he only publicly came out a year or so ago. Isn't this award a tad premature?

  14. "hello", and "rise", are either of you prepared to be as Out as Cooper is? meaning - that your Outness is visible to anyone in the world with internet access?

because if not, you're in no place to criticize him. anonymously criticizing him for not Coming Out sooner? prove you're Out, yourself.

    #ButYouWon'tBlanche

you gotta love how jasontroll is now using "rise" though. that's funny.

  15. What an insult to Vito's memory and legacy. Cooper is not worthy.

  16. I find surprising the fury against the people in the glass closet (Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, Anderson or Jodie Foster) wichi totally disproportinate.
They didn't lie, they don't date beards, they jsut simply didn't come out as soon as some people wanted.
It's very curious that people who are really closeted and dating women, don't get this kind of vitriolic reaction.

But in most cases (Zachary or Matt are good examples) after coming out all seemed calm. With Anderson didn't happen that, he still recieves a lot of bad reactions everytime, and i don't know why

  17. again - all of your criticizing Cooper.

put your own face out there. are YOU prepared to be as Out as he is? to have your gayness online for all to potentially see, and know?

if not - realize that you're still telling yourselves the same things that Cooper once told himself: that he "doesn't have to", or "it's not important"

if you can't put a visible face to being gay, like Cooper, then you're in no place to criticize him.

you should be thanking him for doing what you're not yet able to do, actually.

  18. The reason cooper still gets a bad reaction from many of us is because he was coming from such a place of privilege to begin with (Vanderbilt), and he also tried to attribute his silence to being a "serious journalist" (and then quickly jumped aboard a low brow talk snow format). Same could not be said for the other guys mentioned.

  19. Glad Anderson's getting this award, he deserves it.

    Posted by: Perry | Mar 2, 2013 5:27:10 PM

  20. Regardless of what people think of Madonna, she truly has done a lot over the years for gay causes and visibility. I like Anderson as well although I, like others, think he could have done a lot more if he came out earlier.

  21. Madonna deserves the award more than Coop... But hey, congrats!

    Posted by: Graphicjack | Mar 2, 2013 6:16:25 PM

  22. Maybe the Doormat Award would be more appropriate, since the world saw pictures of his lover kissing someone else. When/If gay marriage is legal, get ready for more of this self aggrandizing from those who view themselves pioneers. It will be fun to watch their reputations decompose like Hollywood celebrities. Please keep Kathy Griffin away from Madonna.

  23. Everyone please ignore Rise. He/She has been coming on here every day to rile up the comments section.

Just ignore Rise and it will go away.

    Posted by: MateoM | Mar 2, 2013 6:30:08 PM

  24. Kiwi, let me try to put this more plainly. The point is that Hollywood celebs are as corrupt as the town is, and those who praise them without limit are living in a sugar coated fantasy world.
That said, I can't help liking The Silver Fox.
But before you criticize others, you might look at your own ideas. Your first sentence to me barely makes sense. And you don't see the difference between a multimillionaire coming out and someone who has to work every day among bigots. Please Mary. Join the real world.

    Posted by: Wilberforce | Mar 2, 2013 7:06:01 PM

  25. Gary- Did you ever stop to think that maybe Anderson and his partner are in an open relationship? Maybe he and Coop share that guy, or they play seperately... or whatever. I prefer monogomous relationships for myself, but don't assume or judge if others don't.
