Lesbian Parent Beaten Unconscious at Playground After Defending Bullied Boy: VIDEO

Scarber

A Texas woman is recovering after enduring a severe anti-gay assault at a school playground which left her unconscious, WFAA reports:

Scarber is grateful simply to be alive. She said she was attacked at an elementary school playground for protecting a bullied four-year-old boy. The scuffle between children, however, quickly escalated into violence among adults, Scarber worries, because she is a lesbian.

“She was just helping him, defending him from a big kid, and this is what happened to her,” said Scarber’s girlfriend and the boy’s mother, Hillary Causey.

SeabournThe couple had taken Causey’s son, Jaxon, to the playground at Mesquite’s Seabourn Elementary on Feb. 17. Shortly after arriving at 2:30 p.m., though, the couple said some older children began pushing Jaxon around.

“Sondra said, ‘Can you please keep your hands off of him, he’s only four,’” Causey said.

The father became enraged, she said, when he realized Scarber, who wears baggy clothes and has short hair, is a woman, and that the two are lesbians. Friends since the third grade, Scarber and Causey have been girlfriends for three years. They’re raising Causey’s young son together.

“When he walked up thinking it was father and mom with the kid, he wasn’t as angry,” said Causey, 26, “but then when he figured out it was a female, he got like super pissed, and I don’t know why.”

She said the man punched and kicked Scarber repeatedly, hurling homophobic slurs at her while she lay on the ground, unconscious.

While the women insist the attack was inspired by their sexual orientation, the police are not convinced it meets the definition of a hate crime, since it wasn't the original trigger for the fight.

They are searching for the attacker: "Officers insist they are looking for a black man, about 5’7", who weighs 185 pounds. He was wearing a royal blue T-shirt and jeans, and was driving an early 2000's silver Chevrolet Impala with temporary tags. Police say he was with a black woman, about 5’5”, 140 pounds, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans."

  5. these stories happen everywhere. there was one just a few short years ago in a toronto suburb. the outcome? the bigoted pig was convicted and got jail time.

  6. "...the police are not convinced it meets the definition of a hate crime, since it wasn't the original trigger for the fight."

Fight? It was an attack. An attack triggered by anti-Gay hatred. That kind of extreme violence directed at a stranger requires extreme hate. So, what's the cause of that hatred? Because she was Gay.

  7. exactly, Derrick. would this mean a racially or religiously-motivated attack "wouldn't count" if the person only became aware of the ethnicity/religion/culture upon, uh, 'getting a closer look'?

    blechhh

  10. And this happened in front of their little boy and other children. Kicking and stomping her in the face while she was on the ground.

That's what so striking in these kind of attaks: the desire to do damage to the face. Overkill--the kind of violence you see in these so-called Gay-panic incidents.

This incident brings back some really bad memories--for too many of us.

"Texas is such a backwards sh1thole"

Yeah, because we all know that black males everywhere else in America would never do something like this, especially if the gay person in question is white--not in California or New York or Massachusetts--no, only in Texas.

Violent crime committed by black males is strictly a Texas thing, not a national thing.

  12. Why did it take two whole paragraphs for the news to acknowledge that she had any kind of relationship to the bullied four-year-old? This was her girlfriend's son, not some random kid. They shouldn't be using language that obscures that.

Houston has an openly gay mayor, something that New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and yes, San Francisco......never have had.

And an openly gay candidate for mayor in Dallas got 40% more of the vote than any openly gay candidate in any of those aforementioned cities ever has.

    Just saying.....

  15. I kinda agree with Charles. The story was somewhat strangely written up, although I don't know if the fact he was her GFs son has any particular bearing.

Of course it was a legitimate 'hate' crime in addition to a brutal assault. But I'll say it again: All assaults by their definition are 'hate' crimes.

  16. Anti-gay hate crimes are over double more likely than any other group in America and are also just as more likely to be violent in nature. That's the reality of it. Regardless of where it is, regardless of the race of the attacker, the fact of the matter is that anti-LGBTQ hate is way more likely than any other form of hate crime, in North America. And hate crimes against us are only rising while declining against other groups.

The fact they aren't going to prosecute this as a hate crime is another thing we see FAR too often regarding anti-gay hate. Either states don't have hate crime mandates or states refuse to use them. Hopefully the couple takes this to the feds and uses the federal hate crime mandate because it's there for reasons like this, when local police intentionally avoid hate crime designation on hate incidents.

My heart breaks for Sondra Scarber, her partner Hillary, and son Jaxon. How animalistic must you be to do something like this with a child watching? So horrible. Hopefully he and Sondra and Hillary aren't too scarred from this incident in the future and hopefully the attacker in question is caught ASAP.

  17. Derrick -

I agree with you. It infuriates me when people, especially school officials and news reporters, refer to an attack as a "fight". What do they think they are doing? Being "fair"?

I watched a video where a basketball player openly and deliberately hauled off and punched an unsuspecting member of the opposite team such that the boy was knocked out. The school said it was "investigating the fight". Would it be unreasonable to think that that was because the attacker was black and the victim was white?

  18. Francis - You can't say "regardless of the race of the attacker" Anti-gay attacks are not proportionate to the demographics of the population. That is an issue. As our friends at the NAACP are known to say, "Where there is race, race is an issue."

As much as the academics are trying to push an idealized world of bullwookie on this subject, race and culture walk hand in hand. The reason white people are white and black people are black is because we reproduce within our own tribe for the most part. Tribes have cultures, ergo race is an outward expression of culture. Yes, a person can be raised in a culture other than his race, and even identify with that culture, but it's impractical and anti-intellectual to think that the perp in an anti-gay attack being much more likely to be black or latino is something as stupid or simple as skin tone. It's a culture which promotes violence and hatred, and it's swpt under the rug because some people can't accept that WASP are much less likely to commit hate crimes overall.

  19. SAD -

Matthew Shepard wasn't killed in Texas.
Trev Broudy was attacked in West Hollywood.
Gwen Araujo was killed in the SF Bay Area.
Tyra Hunter was attacked in DC and allowed to die in DC.
Tony Randolph Hunter was killed outside a DC gay bar.

  20. Typical Rick, desperate grasping for a way to make this racist. You bring nothing to the table, kiddo.

  21. "Would it be unreasonable to think that that was because the attacker was black and the victim was white? "

    David,

are you actually saying that in the United States when there is interracial violence the authorities usually side with Blacks? That's absurd.

But if such a turnaround concerning who has power in America ever did come about after these last 400 years--some might call it "historical poetic justice". Would it be a case of "payback is a biotch"?

"...we all know that black males everywhere else in America would never do something like this, especially if the gay person in question is white"

Rick, I don't know any White Gay person that I'd like to see get beaten to a pulp by a Black male...EXCEPT one.

Now, let's take this discussion back to the problem of anti-Gay violence and the extreme hate that usually characterizes it.

  24. Derrick -

My position is that a crime is a crime. I don't support the notion of hate crimes, but I don't ignore the demographics of crime either.

"are you actually saying that in the United States when there is interracial violence the authorities usually side with Blacks? That's absurd."

Trev Broudy was attacked by three black males who have to drive a long way to attack him "at random". The DA declined to call it a hate crime, because he said that the motive was robbery rather than hate. I'm sure that made a great deal of difference to Broudy as he lay in a coma, but it was also absurd and simplistic.

On the rare occasion when white people attack black people the first claim is that it's a hate crime. When blacks attack whites, it's a robbery. Really? And how did they choose their victim?

And then you turn around and going on some BS about it being poetic justice for slavery. Oh really Derrick, just go Fluck yourself. Seriously. You don't have to act like what they call you.
