Emotional Parents and Their Gay Son Give Powerful Testimony at Minnesota Marriage Equality Hearing: VIDEO

Reitan

Jacob Reitan, an activist who helped found the Soulforce Equality Ride back in 2006, and his parents Randi and Philip, offered testimony at the Minnesota marriage equality hearings yesterday, after which both the Senate and House bills advanced to their respective floors for upcoming consideration.

I've written about Soulforce many times on the site and featured a video of Jacob and his grandparents speaking out for marriage equality last year.

  1. *bawls*

this is brave, and this is needed. I'd like to see those heinous bigots who spoke against Equality look this kid in the eye and tell him that this life and his love will ruin america and lead to...uh....an explosion of AIDS-y anal lesions. or something.

it's the digital age, folks. love will be recorded for all time, and so will hate.

  3. So proud of our smart, articulate gay brothers and sisters and their devoted family members who fight for them. This is moving beyond words.

  4. Wow. A bit overwhelming in its simplicity and power. It's so reasonable. It's so human.

  5. This is so powerful, because it is love, family and honesty. All the lies and hate the other side brings in, cannot win.

  6. These folks are legion here in Minnesota. Phil and Randi for their unwavering support for their gay son (and their other children as well) and Jake for his thoughtful and pointed activism. Thanks for sharing these terrific Minnesota resources with others! As always, the family expressed themselves beautifully yesterday in the hearings.

  7. It's pretty telling that those FOR equality talk of enrichment of the family, beautiful weddings- all happy, positive things. And the folks that testify against equality? They talk about sodomy, AIDS, the end of the world. Pure unadulterated fear.

  8. I sang with the TCGMC back in 1999-2002, and the Reitans were active supporters even back then. What wonderful people. If only there were more like them.

  11. I loved this testimony. I can't help but cry in happiness. I enjoy seeing parents who really love and stand by their children who may be marginalized.
