Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) Introduces Bill to Prohibit Gay Marriages on Military Bases and Protect Anti-Gay Service Members

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) last Thursday introduced the Military Religious Freedom Protection Act in the House, the Washington Blade reports:

HuelskampThe legislation has two parts. The first states that the religious and moral beliefs of service members and military chaplains concerning human sexuality won’t be the basis of adverse personnel action or discrimination in the armed forces. The section section states chaplains may not be forced to perform a rite that is contradictory to their religious teachings, which would include same-sex marriages.

The second section states that a military base can’t be used for any marriage or marriage-like ceremony other than the union of one man, one woman.

Huelskamp is known for pushing anti-gay legislation in the House. Last year, on the same day that President Obama endorsed marriage equality, Huelskamp amended major funding legislation on the House floor to reaffirm the Defense of Marriage Act.

Huelskamp's bill has six co-sponsors: Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Steve King (R-Iowa), Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) and Tim Walberg (R-Mich.)

  2. Unfortunately this won't get much attention in the MSM - I wish it would so people would know just bigoted these people are. The more the GOP pushes it's wingnut agenda the more isolated it will become.

  4. He has four adopted children.

I don't think adults who go on record for having anti-gay beliefs should be allowed to adopt. After all, being anti-gay doesn't mean your children will be straight.

If you're not prepared to live in the real world and love and accept children just as they are, you shouldn't be allowed to adopt.

  13. I am just so glad that this brilliant law maker crafted this important legislation to protect moral and religious personnel in the military from those mean ol'gays..........not only is this a total waste of time, but religious personnel are already protected........this is such a pathetic waste of time and taxpayer money

  14. i agree with Little kiwi:

being anti-gay is an indication of bias/prejudice/intolerance........and should be a bar to an application to adopt.

Adopting children into such a household of prejudice is manifestly not in the best interests of the child.
i hope the Social services have noted this individual for immediate investigation to protect those children.

  18. Bills like this, which guys like Huelskamp, King, Hartzler and these other bigots know wont pass, is all about sticking to our community and sending a "I hate you" message against us. Nothing more, nothing less.

Kiwi is right, that men like Huelskamp should not be allowed to adopt. Nor should they be allowed to be teachers or officials in schools at all. There needs to be active movement against allowing anti-gay bigots anywhere where they have authority of children.

  22. Isn't it interesting that some of the "liberals" who regularly post on this site would use the law, if they were in power, to prevent people they disagree with from adopting children. They don't dislike the abuse of power as long as they are the abusers.
