NOM's Sinking Ship

(image via fred karger)

After marriage bills advanced in France, Rhode Island, and Delaware, Santa Fe voted to support marriage equality, and Nevada voted to repeal its ban on same-sex marriage, NOM's Brian Brown called it a "tough week" in a letter to supporters.

Brown then went on to honor a "heroic marriage champion" lawmaker in Rhode Island, Senator Harold M. Metts, D-Providence/Slater, whose speech Jeremy Hooper kindly summarized:

In his twelve minute floor speech (/sermon), Rhode Island senator Harold Metts (D-Providence/Slater) viciously condemned gay people as having "vile affections," called "acts of sodomy" an "abomination to God," warned that ancient civilizations were destroyed for going against God and intimated that our LGBT-accepting society is going the same way, claimed "Satan and gunmen have come in" to our schools (with inclusive school books as his followup example), and intimated that people can just up and change their "sexual preferences" at whim.

Brian and Maggie better find a piece of plywood to cling on to fast if these are the people they're holding up as role models.

  1. The fight isn't close to being over yet, but it's delicious to see the insane homophobes being pushed further and further away from the mainstream. These people have shot themselves in the foot with their behavior for years upon years. The progress we're making is largely a result of their behavior.

  3. There isn't a piece of plywood on the planet large enough to buoy their fat, bloated egos.

  4. How anyone could listen to Metts spew his hatred and then agree with him is beyond belief. He couldn't even say "good morning" without having a sneer on his lip.

  6. I really want to hate f*ck Brian Brown. Bare.

  7. A little schadenfreude with your morning coffee, Andy? I can't say I blame you. It's only after being on Towleroad for over a year that I finally understand what living with homophobia must be like for LGBT people. Revenge must be sweet.

  8. I shudder to think that a US senator gave a "sermon" on the Senate Floor. His job is not to preach, but to represent.

  9. We are losing the battle and the war but just keep on sending me money. Thanks for your support.

  10. @ Mary - This has never been about revenge but wining our rights in spite of hateful homophobes is sweet.

  11. That's hilarious that Metts is so against gays considering almost all of the gay clubs in Providence are in his district.

  12. "Heroic marriage champion" = Comically blabbering religious wingnut. He was actually a champion for our side since no one in their right mind wanted to be associated with this lunatic. Contrast with the eloquent statements by those who changed from No to Yes, thanks in part to the likes of Sen. Metts. You could feel the collective bipartisan WTF? during his entire hot metts of a speech.

  13. I picture them both on the fantail of the Titanic in Salvation Army uniforms. Maggie blowing into a Tuba, Brownie nervously conducting. Sweet!

  14. The picture should show instead Brian standing behind Maggie as in the movie Titanic.

  15. It's not about revenge, Mary. It's about winning. And we're winning by NOT playing the game NOM wants us to play. And even still to this day our community is still the only community it's OK to make wildly offensive statements on (aka Jeremy Irons), the only community whose being is used as a means to deride and as a punchline. However through all the hate, we're seeing a breakthrough. That's all it's ever been about.

  16. That will make the part they are standing on go down first.

  17. @ Jack M. Metts is not a US Senator. He is a Rhode Island state senator.

No doubt his words do represent some portion of his constituents, which is troubling in itself. But as we can see from the overwhelming vote in the RI Senate in favor of marriage equality, his words did not persuade other members of the state senate to vote with him. He may have persuaded someone in his district to launch a campaign to unseat him in the next election, which is a good thing.

  18. NOM's ship will not sink until its handful of deep-pocket donors stop giving money. They will continue to be on the losing side of the marriage equality fight, but they aren't going away as long as someone is willing to pay their bills.

  19. Actually NOM is taking its show world-wide. They've been working hand in glove with France's La Manif Pour Tous which is a charter member of a global anti-gay organization. LMPT has just had its site translated into English, German, Spanish and Russian to spread NOM's propaganda to as many bigots and in as many languages as possible.

I'm hoping pro-gay activists in the US take this new threat seriously and start coordinating a global plan to help other countries fight the NOM propaganda machine.

Pro-gay activists in France admit that they were broad-sided and overwhelmed by the NOM-inspired tactics in France which caused support for the ssm/adoption bill to plunge 10 percentage points in a matter of months. It would have been nice if American organizations that are used to debunking NOM's lies would have helped their French counterparts earlier before this spun out of control. Just think what might have happened if the socialist party did not have such a strong lock on the government. NOM's interference might have sent the bill down to defeat.

  20. Maggie Gallagher & Brian Brown sell hate.

Revenge?? I like to think of Andy's article as a celebration of justice triumphant over organized hate.

    Posted by: JONES | Apr 26, 2013 11:12:34 AM

  21. candide001, thanks for the heads-up about NOM. Like the Catholic Church and American evangelicals, NOM sees a fertile field for LGBT bigotry overseas, especially in Africa.

It simply astounds me that organisations such as NOM or AFA or FRC and their allies or people like Brian Brown or Mike Huckabee or Maggie Gallagher, et al, would devote practically all their resources to perpetuate hatred and animus against us.

I've watched these groups closely for a couple of decades (know thine enemy) and I will tell you that their primary focus has been on LGBT people. Why? Makes me wanna scream: GET A G*DDAM LIFE!

  22. We'd be better off if they had normal sex lives.

  23. Harold Metts' speech just confirms how irrelevant and outdated the Christian cult is. How does calling me an abomination help his cause? He's not going to convince me, my family or my hundreds of friends of anything other than that religion is insanity and stands for injustice.

Christians, many of them, are truly scary people. They must be operating on low IQs or be brain damaged to even believe any of the outrageous judgements they utter. At this point I don't even get upset when I am called an abomination or am told God Hates Fags. I mostly feel sorry for people consumed by hate and obcessed with everything gay. Its all quite sad and pathetic, really

  24. Brian Brown is a paper tiger. Why doesn't he donate a million to his champion in the next election. Or use millions to defeat the Republicans in R.I. who all voted yes.

    Posted by: simon | Apr 26, 2013 12:34:46 PM

  25. No wonder these two don't want the rest of us to have sex -- who would F**k their ugly a$$es?
