Ronald Reagan's Son Demands Churches Fight Back Against Gay Marriage: 'Where's the Moral Outrage?'

Michael Reagan, the former President's son, is upset about the recent shift in support for marriage equality:

ReaganFox TV, Rush Limbaugh and other talk-show pundits have weighed in, arguing the conservative — and moral — position that sanctifying gay marriage with the grace of the U.S. Constitution is not only wrong but a serious threat to the culture of this country.

But those media outlets often speak to those who are already in the choir. That leaves a lot of other Americans who aren’t hearing anyone preaching the conservative argument on gay marriage.

I don’t expect the GOP to provide any leadership. Republicans are too busy cat-fighting with each other and making sure their presidential choice will be whooped by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

And where in the heck are the churches on the issue of legalizing gay marriage?

Where are the Protestants, Jews and Catholics? Have they lost their tongues? Their hearts and wills? Their institutional you-know-whats?

Where’s the moral outrage? Why aren’t thousands of our pastors, priests and rabbis shouting from their pulpits? Why aren’t they leading their congregations through the streets in mass protest?

  2. The word "son" is missing from the headline.

  3. Sorry, Mr. Reagan, we already co-opted the Jews and Catholics. The reason why you don't hear as much anti-gay screeching anymore is that we've already beaten you. And this cultural change is permanent.

    Why?

Maybe they're actually following the teachings of Christ.

  7. It should be noted that Ronald Reagan's other son, Ron, is a progressive and pro gay ally.

  8. Yeah, where's all the manufactured outrage - umm... I mean moral outrage?

  9. The truth of the matter is, Michael, that most people realize a man putting a ring on the finger of another man doesn't affect them, and even conservatives see the writing on the wall. Although I'm a bit skeptical about the whole politicizing our marriage rights, one clear positive is that it's no longer cool to be pathologically homophobic in mainstream society.

  10. @Little Kiwi - Please tell us how you really feel!! (hell doesn't exist btw...)

  11. Don't worry Michael. The anti marriage sentiment will be carried out in big and small ways on a daily basis once it's a reality. We're hearing all the pro, but the con is lying low.

  12. Well, I knew it couldn't have been his other son.

  13. I'm glad Reagan's other son is on our side, and so much more articulate and well reasoned. Michael Reagan must not have noticed that the Mormons and Catholics are the main forces against marriage equality. And he certainly hasn't noticed that there is a separation of church and state, and a difference between civil marriage and "holy matrimony." He's such a tool.

  15. Considering the Michael was adopted, then neglected as a child and otherwise ignored by his family (they've all essentially disowned him) I should think this is more of a cry for help than anything else. I'm sure the other Reagans are for marriage equality. Michael was the only one coming out of that dysfunctional family that tried to win Ronny's approval in adulthood by being conservative. Patti and Ron Jr. couldn't care less about their estrangement. Nancy was more pro-Ronny than conservative.

  16. @"...hell doesn't exist btw..."

so, you've never tried to reason with Rick or Old Lady David Hearne.

  17. Michael's father was one of the worst Presidents in our history. He can go suck an Easter egg, if there are any left. I didn't even know this guy existed.

  18. His opinion matters WHY?
He's the son of Ronnie Regan? BFD.
Since his brother Ron is a closeted gay man and he's a nobody it would be better if he just STFU already.
It wouldn't be surprising if he was a closet case too. Bigotry doesn't fall far from the tree.
Pathetic man and a pathetic family all the way around.
It's amazing the state of California survived having been run BADLY by TWO completely incompetent ex-actors-Ronnie and Arnie...jeez.
Fortunately MEN with some real leadership have always replaced these incompetent losers-Jerry Brown and soon-to-be California Governor-Gavin Newsom. :) Hot and Smart. Bring on the leaders and let the loser bible thumping bigots/idiots like this dude fade into obscurity already!

  19. Actually many churches are on our side. Maybe he needs to be asking Gene Robinson where his moral outrage is. Not all Christians are complete a$$h0les.

  20. TOWERLOAD should clarify that Michael is the adopted son of no blood relation to Ronald Reagan; who were sent to boarding school and couldn't recognized his father at graduation ; who later after career as a media pundit started selling @Reagan.com email address for 39.95 per year. lol .

Hilarious. California is sinking into the ground so fast that before long, it won't matter if the BIG ONE comes along and just finishes the job.

Enjoy paying that $4000 a month for a one-room dump of an apartment in San Francisco, tax proceeds going, of course, to support the illegal alien gang members who have become the majority of your fellow citizens.

  24. Did he actually utter "US Constitution" when trying to argue against gay marriage and then completely blow off how gay marriage isn't guaranteed by our constitution?

    WTF?

But, may I just add once again, here we have another man whom no man would ever want to hook up with who has a problem with men marrying other men. Mathematics anyone?

  25. Maybe Michael Reagan (and several Towleroad commenters) read and listen to different news outlets than I do, but I've heard lots of moral outrage from the Catholics. Or don't Bishop Dolan, Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict count?
