Five Gay Activists Arrested at Texas Capitol at Sit-In Against Four GOP Senators: VIDEO

Five gay activists from the group GetEQUAL Texas were arrested on Wednesday after refusing to leave the offices of four Republican senators who refuse to support Senate Bill 237, the Fair Employment Act, KEYE reports:

Michael Diviesti of GetEQUAL TX says, "What the bill does is says 'hey look, if you live in Texas you can't fire somebody simply because they happen to be gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender.' You have to have a real reason to fire someone or deny them employment."

We tried to speak with all of the four senators who the protesters say are not supporting the bill, none could speak to us on camera. Senate Bill 237 is currently stuck in committee, where it's been for the last month. It will stay there until it gets the votes needed to move to the next level.

  1. Yep, that's politics here in the Great State of Texas but, hey, it's changing. Not fast enough but it's changing. Give the state another decade or so and I think we'll see a decidely less-GOPer influence on the lives of Texans. Now that'll be a good thing!

  2. Send a memo to the celebrity suckups at GLAAD, the twits at Log Cabin Republicans and the party-circuit queens at GoProud that this is how it's done. You get in there and get your hands dirty and sometimes get yourself arrested when fighting for equality.

  3. Amen, Jamal. The non-glam, non-swanky dinner WORK that needs to be done to shine a light on injustuice.

    And this is just pathetic.

Olympic judging got so corrupt that an overhaul of the process had to be implemented; judges have to now EXPLAIN their markings as per a set list of criteria. Not so in law, eh? You don't have to explain or defend your vote following any form of rationale, you can just say "well, dang it, it's mah opINion?" fail.

thank YOU, GetEqual. keep it up.

  4. Blesses are those who would try to bring light to the eternal darkness that is Texas.

  6. I dunno Jamal. I'm going to be devil's advocate for a minute and say, hey, the 1960s are over. I do respect them going out on the line like this, they are braver than I am. But will this really make anyone in Texas think, ohhh, those gays deserve justice after all! I prefer, among others, the approach of supporting gay candidates in local & state elections.

  7. EchtKultig: Sadly, that hasn't worked in Texas. In fact, a bill denying funding to school districts that provide domestic partnership benefits HAS made it out of committee in the Texas House and is a clear attack on same-sex families.

Our allies are few and replacing them will take decades. We are ONE vote away from getting SB 237 out of committee and a week away from this bill dying if it isn't voted out of committee. The legislature doesn't go back into session for two more years after it closes near the end of May. How many of our people will suffer more harm during that two year period? We cannot wait for supportive candidates while LGBTQ people suffer. To do so would be inhumane. Instead we must hold bigotry up to the light and expose it for the world to see. Doing so will also help expedite the replacement of bigots in the legislature --- these are the people who are against equality - FIRE THEM!

And to the four GOP Senators... see you real soon.

    With love and light.
