Documents Show Cardinal Dolan Moved Millions in Church Assets to Hide Them from Sexual Abuse Victims

NYC's Cardinal Timothy Dolan moved millions in funds to protect them from sexual abuse victims seeking claims against the Catholic Church, according to newly-revealed documents:

DolanFiles released by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee on Monday reveal that in 2007, Cardinal Timothy F. Dolan, then the archbishop there, requested permission from the Vatican to move nearly $57 million into a cemetery trust fund to protect the assets from victims of clergy sexual abuse who were demanding compensation.

Cardinal Dolan, now the archbishop of New York, has emphatically denied seeking to shield church funds as the archbishop of Milwaukee from 2002 to 2009. He reiterated in a statement Monday that these were “old and discredited attacks.”

However, the files contain a 2007 letter to the Vatican in which he explains that by transferring the assets, “I foresee an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability.” The Vatican approved the request in five weeks, the files show.

UPDATE: David Mixner weighs in.

Cardinal Dolan has long ago lost the ability to understand the concept of 'truth'.He should immediately resigned from being Cardinal. The 'truth' demands it.

  1. I hope NYPD take a page from Quebec's anti-corruption squad and start arresting public figures. Timothy Dolan is a p.o.s. who should have the book thrown at him.

  2. Surprise Surprise, but they still are considered a not for profit, tax free entity and people still actually give them money...Amazing.

  3. Thank you Towleroad for continuing to publicize the flagrant mendacity and hypocrisy of the corrupt leadership of the godforsaken and crumbling Roman Catholic Church.

  4. Just saw awarded document about abuse in Catholic church, oh dear, deaf children were used for decades, chuch knew it, the Vatican did very little or nothing. Disgusting.
The document was Alex Gibney's Silence in the House of God.

  5. So the Vatican actually transfered the funds through Dolan. The source who has sooo much to say on how gays and lesbians should live their lives, isn't holding up to their own morals and expectations of how they should conduct business? They have been found to hold the church's self-interest above what's right according to scripture? I think I'll listen to another source as my moral compass. Thanks anyhow.

  7. He is a foul piece of human garbage. Throw the book at him. A nice long prison sentence for corruption wouldn't even begin to do him the justice he deserves.

  9. The linked article from the NY Times states that the cardinal deposed to the issue of church funds in february this year.

if that is the case and the disclosed documents now show he was misleading in his deposed evidence then one suspects he may have some explaining to do to the judge in the case.

or perhaps yet again the RC church does not consider itself bound by the laws, courts and judges of the various countries it operates in?

    just a thought.

  11. Let's hope that his "Excellency" will no longer be welcome as a pundit on national TV.

He's a scumbag and she should be treated as such.

  12. David Mixer demands his resignation. The fact is Pope Benedick condoned it. We will see what Pope Francis will do. May be fire both Dolan and the ex-Pope.

  13. I hear they are discussing new legislation. It will be called "Dolan's Law". Whenever a Catholic church moves into the neighborhood they have to alert the local residents.

    Papist Swine.

  18. Just yesterday this hypocrite posted a screed on his blog calling for Catholics to be "counter cultural" in response to last week's SCOTUS rulings:

  19. If anyone who wasn't in the clergy did this they'd throw them in jail for contempt. Watch as once again the court ignores the law and continues its criminal activities without consequences.

  25. Haven't even seen the most disgusting part mentioned here:

    Dolan and the Vatican were PAYING hush money to the priests/sex abusers to get them to quietly leave the church;

while simultaneously HIDING money from victims who might make successful claims against the church.
