Head Of Russian Orthodox Church: Gay Marriage 'Brings Us Closer To Apocalypse'

Russian Orthodox Patriarch
Anyone currently keeping an eye on the news is likely familiar with the fiercely hostile climate faced by LGBT people living in or visiting Russia. While the country's newly-adopted anti-gay laws are likely the main culprit, recent comments made by The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and released by RT illustrate how the Russian Orthodox Church is adding fuel to the fire.

Kirill decried recent LGBT rights advancements in countries such as The United States, France, and The United Kingdom, and urged his followers to resist attempts to enact similar measures in Russia:

“This is a very dangerous apocalyptic symptom, and we must do everything in our powers to ensure that sin is never sanctioned in Russia by state law, because that would mean that the nation has embarked on a path of self-destruction.”

The Russian patriarch also went on to elaborate that, in countries that champion LGBT rights, freedom of choice is seen as the only value worth protecting, even when a person makes a choice that is supposedly immoral and/or detrimental to the fabric of society. “Where sin is elected through freedom, there comes death, terror and dictatorship,” he added. He then asked for his followers to pray for their country, and protect it from “the slavery of sin” that would cause “self-destruction of the nation”.

Those famiiar with the Russian Orthodox Church would likely find these comments to be routine, since the church has already been associated with anti-gay protests and attacks in the past. That said, given the controversies surrounding recent human rights violations in Russia, the Patriarch's comments do shed some light as to the source of this country's vehement and intense homophobia.

  5. Because an "apocalyptic symptom" that is avoided by Russia will save Russia? So all the countries who treat people equally will be doomed and countries who treat their people like dirt or less will be saved by the Almighty? Yeah, real believable!

  6. In the spirit of John Chrysostom, the 4th century prelate and "saint" of the church that first compared homosexuals to murderers and concluded that they were worse, Krill has managed to raise hate speech and ungodly behavior to a new level impacting at least hundreds of thousands of Russian LGBTs. If Jesus were alive today, he'd order this SOB to stop praying to Him. Krill will cause great harm and many suicides because of his hate speech.

  9. As a Catholic kid, growing up in the 50's, every mass ended with the priest intoning the following prayer to God:

"Savior of the World... Save Russia."

    Whatever from? Whatever for?

  11. At least the Western Church didn't go that far. He meant the Eastern God will destroy the West? He has to battle it out with the Western God.

  12. Once again, men running around in fancy dress telling the world what is right. They should be given the credence they deserve - none!

  13. Yes, by declaring LGBT people unfit for basic human rights Russia maintains its long road of being a gleaming society, just like when the Soviets were in power (and pushed the Orthodox church underground). Yes, don't begin going down that path of self-destruction; take the word of the new Bolsheviks in longer gowns and weirder hats and beards.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Meet the new boss (pigs) same as the old boss (pigs).

Yet again, here's another Russian group using the gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people as kindling for their sick ways of dealing with the fact that they have screwed up yet again. Bring back the Czars.

  14. I guess 75 years of communist atheist rule in holy mother Russia was not enough to end the world, but this apparently is.

What's missing here is a critical press that challenges the bromides delivered by religious leaders. They shouldn't get a platform to broadcast from without a skeptical challenge.

  17. At the source of the russian governments recent homophobic stance is the Russian Orthodox Church. It was Peter the Great that reigned in the Church in the 1700's, as they were a constant threat to the Tsars power, until Peter arranged to make the Tsar the head of the church, to keep their power in check...this worked well until the Bolsheviks took over...Problem is that since the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Church has regained ALL of it's power and MORE, but now, there are no checks in place. Then in to this scenario comes Putin, who in a effort to legitimize his power grab turns to the Church, and in return for their support offers them anything they want...and they want to return Russia to the Dark Ages, which Putin will support, as long as they validate his rule. So you see, Putin is just a player in the game, the Game that the church controls...The Tsars would never have allowed them to gain so much control...but it's too late now for any political ruler to control the Church...In a word: "God help Russia" and more so our GLBT brothers.
