Six Attacks on LGBT People in D.C. in Past 10 Days: VIDEO

DailyKos reports that in the past 10 days in Washington D.C. there have been at least six reported attacks on LGBT people, four of which involved transgender victims.

The WaPo adds:

Some advocates agree that several of the incidents, two of which occurred Saturday, were most likely not motivated by sexual orientation. But they say all should be highlighted because a vulnerable group is involved and the public should know what’s happening.

Others disagree. Diane Davis of Temple Hills, the aunt of recent homicide victim Malika Stover, was angry when advocates distributed a funeral notice that read: “Shooting claims life of LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] victim.” Stover, 35, who was a lesbian, was not killed because she was gay, Davis said.

“She was a person, not a label,” said Davis, who thinks her niece was slain in a June 22 robbery of a dice game near her childhood home in Southeast Washington’s Barry Farm. “That funeral statement contradicts what I think happened.”

  1. Four of these were robberies, and one was a fight between a drag queen and a passerby over make-up. Masquerading attacks as hate crimes when they are not demeans those who are actually victims of hate-motivated attacks.

  2. And 89 attacks on straight people too....why the media created hysteria??...

  3. Why does Alan Brickman, an alias of Rick/Jason, hate LGBT people? Attacks on straight people? BS. And you know it.

  4. Oh, just plain, old assaults and street robberies. Probably the victims just got punched and/or pistol whipped in the face, maybe broken nose/cheek bone fractures. Man, I'll feel so much better that it wasn't a 'hate' crime. I'm sure everyone DC concurs.

Why don't especially so-called 'progressives' and by extension true believer and shill Democrats acknowledge DC has been under 'progressive' and Democratic control for 40 years or more, and during this time has had outrageous levels of violent crime, at one point peaking between 400-500 murders a year, for a city of 600,000 or so people. Ditto it's sister city Baltimore just up the road. DC and the DC/NorthernVirginia/Maryland now have not a burgeoning but full fledged serious violent central American [mostly Salvadoran] gang problem due to the huge influx over the past 15-20 years, many of who came in 'undocumented' [PC newspeak: illegal].

The band plays on. Nothing to see hear folks, we got everything under control.

  5. People aren't "LGBT" whether they're victims of something or not. I think it's impossible to be "LGBT", in fact. I'm gay. Maybe your a lesbian. But I am not LGBT.

  6. Saying DC is under Democratic rule is only half true. They are also governed by the House of Representatives (which sets the District budget among other things). The result is a city with a small tax base that needs spending to support the infrastructure a large number of people that work in the city demands. Spending is decided by people without a stake in its results. One Rep. recently said a DC council vote to take over it's own budget was similar to teenagers demanding a larger allowance. So yes, the city is remarkably Democrat. However, the policies that govern the city are a hodgepodge of rules thrown together by several different (and sometimes competing) sources.

  7. Thank you, Dan. I'd forgotten that the House of Representatives decides spending issues in DC. And considering who controls the House right now...well, conditions won't be getting better any time soon.

  9. As a DC resident this is alarming. Yes, it is a hate crime if people are being targeted for robbery and/or attacked because they are transgendered. The incident on 14th street was a bunch of drunk girls attacking a transgendered performer because of her looks.

  10. @TeeGee,when a bigot is beating your @$$ up, I doubt if your assailant is going to give a rat's @$$ whether you are "gay" or "LGBT". Another "I'm not into labels" queen.
