Gay Intern Who Saved Gabby Gifford Hit with Homophobic Recall Campaign

HernandezDaniel Hernandez Jr, the intern credited with helping save Rep. Gabrielle Giffords life after she was shot in 2011, is facing an anti-gay recall campaign aimed at removing him from the Tucson-area school board on which he serves, Right Wing Watch reports:

The story behind the recall is the kind of byzantine saga found only in local politics. Four of the five members of the Sunnyside Unified School District, which includes parts of Tucson and surrounding areas, are now facing recall petitions – two members who faced recall for their support of an embattled schools superintendent turned around and filed recall petitions on two members who opposed the superintendent, including Hernandez.

But the tactics being used against Hernandez are unusual. A source in the district sends us two flyers that Hernandez’s opponents are reportedly handing out to parents dropping their children off at schools in the district.

One of the flyers attacks Hernandez's sexuality, reading: “Put a REAL Man on the Sunnyside Board…Daniel Hernandez is LGBT…We need someone who will support Sports and cares about our kids. We don’t need someone who hates our values.”

The other claims that “Daniel Hernandez cares about only one things taking your guns away”. See that flyer, and the rest of the story over at Right Wing Watch.

Awesome flier. I think I did one of those back in the 1970s for an elementary school social.

These people are beneath contempt. They are so far underground, they’re basically at Earth’s core.

It’s NOT fake, this stuff happens all over the country, every day…

People get away with it because nobody confronts the people handing that sh*t out.

We each live in different communities, and that’s where everything starts, at home.

It’s not fair, and it’s not easy, and it’s scary as hell to confront crap like this when it happens, but you’ve GOT to DO it.

I’m reminded of my own experiences in the past, and of a friend of mine in California during the campaign against SSM there, he was the ONLY one in his town standing on the street corner with a sign urging people to vote against the measure. The ONLY one. Think about that; there were a LOT of gay people living in that town; you could see their ads on all the sex sites, but he was the ONLY ONE to go out there, ALL ALONE.

Not a brave guy, not a social guy, just a guy that still held out some hope that despite being over 50 maybe someday he MIGHT have a shot at getting married…

People think it’s all about activists and organized this and posting on blogs like this, IT’S NOT, it’s ONE PERSON, STANDING ALONE just as often as not.

    Think about that.

Not enough for a school board member to support EDUCATION–that’s trumped by an appeal to the presumption that gay folks are anti-sports. Remember the high school that spent $20Mil or so on a football stadium? That’s where the real thing is.

perfectly articulates what the vast majority of straight male conservatives care about when voting: not policy, not character, nope. “is this a man i’d have a beer with while reminiscing about high school football glory days, while we drop N-bombs and joke about F@gs?”

we Torontonians know them as Rob Ford supporters. not a clue about politics. but lordy, dont’cha think we need a leader who loves sports? yeah. suuure.

I remember when I came out of the closet, I had to sign a waiver stating that I now had to hate kids and sports, or else i’d lose my gloryhole privileges and have my ABBA collection confiscated.

Wow, he’s L, G, B AND T! Talk about a multi-tasker and someone I would want serving on my school board!
