Big Freedia Sets Guinness World Record for Twerking: VIDEO

On Tuesday we reported that Big Freedia planned to set the Guinness World Record for most people twerking simultaneously at an event promoting her new FUSE show today in Herald Square.

She did it:

As a Guinness judge, sporting a jacket, tie and clipboard, looked on, the protagonist of the upcoming Fuse show Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, premiering October 2, ass-embled 358 dancers, ranging in age from 8 to 80, to twerk for two minutes straight. A Guinness judge said a minimum of 250 people were needed to set the record, a number easily broken by the swelling crowd.

Asked about what the record would mean to her, Big Freedia told Fuse, “It would open a lot of doors and set history for bounce music and let the world know that we’ve been twerking for a long time. This is not new at all. Now it’s time to set the record.”

Check out a couple Instagram clips from the event, AFTER THE JUMP...

  3. Who?

Sometimes it's weird reading blogs by east coast bloggers when you're not from there...

It's almost like they expect everyone in the country to know about the locals. What's this guy do for a living? What is "Queen of Bounce"?

  4. Hey Mike, there is a thing called Google. I'm sure if Diplo - the white and okay looking hetero mentee of Big Freedia - were featured here you wouldn't be such a smart mouth. Long Live FRREEEEDIA!!!!

  5. I understand the reason why stories about New York City get more attention on his blog. But, what bothers me is the assumption that everyone knows NYC geography.

Unless you know that Herald Square is in NY City, you'd have to guess where this event happened. (And, the linked Towleroad article says "New Orleans Bounce queen Big Freedia", so many people might assume this was in New Orleans.)

  6. If you don't know Big Freedia by September 2013, one has to wonder what rock you've been hiding under for the past two or three years. Good grief, queens!

  7. I want nothing more, right now, than to sink into a coma & only be revived when this twerking mania Is dead & buried.

  8. Ted Cruz has a filibuster in Washington, while Big Freedia holds a twerking marathon in New York City.
I'm trying to figure out which one is the most ludicrous.
    Americans are.......interesting......!!

  9. It's easy, David. Big Freedia makes you feel so good you just want to shake your ass. Ted Cruz just IS an ass.

  10. This behavior is total degeneracy and should be disavowed by gay people.

  11. Feeeedia is the best!and for you trans phobic bigots, she is a he who does not identify as a she, she's just awesome. If you can't get behind her music at all, what is wrong with you? Why do you live like that?

So, are you auditioning for the Meryl Streep role in the Towleroad production of "Doubt"?

  15. @David from Canada, like Canadians are perfect. Big Freedia = Love and Fun. Ted Cruz = Lunatic.

  16. @Bill: Expecting everyone who visits this site to know the lyrics of a 100+ year old song is silly. I don't think that adding "in New York City" is too much to ask of the folks who post articles.

  17. To not know that Herald Square is in NYC is just ignorant. It's amazing the way people get upset about their own ignorance. You certainly don't need to be from the east coast to know what bounce is, or who Big Freedia is. Maybe you don't pay attention to everything that has been going on in the world, but don't get upset at a blog because you are ignorant.

  18. I don't like twerkers. But I liked that one.
