Gay Man in Russia Cuffed, Raped at Gunpoint by Vigilantes: REPORT

An ethnic Uzbek man was reportedly raped at gunpoint in Novosibirsk, Russia after being threatened by a group of "six or seven" vigilantes, who filmed the alleged incident and posted it online where it began circulating on the mobile phone application WhatsApp, Radio Free Europe reports:

RussiaThe series of short clips, making the rounds on the mobile phone application WhatsApp show the victim, who seems to be an ethnic Uzbek, being bullied into confessing that he is gay.

He is asked to identify himself and is stripped of his clothes, which are later burned. He is then handcuffed, beaten, insulted, and threatened with a gun. Ultimately, he is forced to sodomize himself by sitting on a bottle, which is then pushed with a bat.

The man, visibly terrified, weeps throughout much of the ordeal.

Radio Free Europe tracked down one of the alleged attackers:

The Uzbek-speaking source, speaking from Russia, confirms that the victim was targeted because he is gay.

"We made him sit on a bottle so that he repents for his sins and comes to reason," he told RFE/RL's Uzbek Service. "We did this to protect the dignity of Uzbeks. We live and work here, we are in contact with people of different nationalities. There will be no respect for us otherwise."

According to the purported assailant, the attack took place on September 11 in Novosibirsk, where he himself is a student, and all the participants were ethnic Uzbeks.

He says the man was first detained by a group of Russian antigay vigilantes who lured him to a fake date through a social-networking website.

  2. What the f*** is wrong with these people?

  3. Religion sucks.

I guess the police there won't be doing anything about this. We have athletes going to a country where the law and the police force DON'T CARE IF GAY PEOPLE ARE BEATEN RAPED AND KILLED.

  4. This is heart-breakingly horrific.

These people are the public face of bigotry.

  6. I wonder if it was a Coke bottle.
After all, they're the sponsor for this crap.

When I eat out, I tell the waitstaff why I will refuse to drink their Coke.

    Every time.

  7. Barbaric. Hard to believe it's 2013 when you see and hear of this type of atrocity.

There is heavy karma waiting for those who took part in this.

  8. @ JOHNY :
    I respect Karma.....but I can't wait..

I would love to see a well publicized campaign to encourage all artists, musicians, dance, ballet, orchestral, any cultural exchange whatever boycotting any performing or playing in Russia.
    Yes, and sports participants also.

People like Cher, Lady Gaga, are already vocal in their condemnation of the anti-gay laws which give encouragement to these criminal Neanderthals,

I would go even further and promulgate the campaign that anyone who performs in Russia is aligning and supporting homophobia.
The HRC should be announcing such a stance from the rooftops.

As some of those whom I admire used to say : " Silence Equals Death."

  9. What really rubs salt in the wounds is that in the linked article, it says "...the clip drew overwhelmingly favorable comments from viewers."
If one gives credence to the Multiverse theory, this is surely one of the dystopian worlds for gays.
I wish gays everywhere were prepared to deal with the threats that come their way whenever they do come. I wish that poor guy had his own gun and was prepared to use it to defend not only his own life, but the lives of potential/probable future victims as these monsters and their supportive viewers are now empowered/emboldened to do more of the same.

  10. The only way to help these people is to get them the hell out of there. Make asylum freely available to anyone who can make a minimal showing of gay/lesbian/bi sexual orientation.

Russia is slow to change. It does not particularly care about condemnation in the West, as it sees the West as its competitor and/or foe. It is too large and too well resourced to be threatened with boycotts and sanctions. That sort of approach might work with a nation that is aid-dependent like Uganda, but it will not work with a major power like Russia. Change may come internally, but that will take generations.

The environment is deadly. Since we can't change the environment any time in the foreseeable future, the only thing to do is to help people escape.

  13. I wish that the national news media would carry more of these stories, instead of showing us internet videos of cats and babies passed off as news.

  14. Post the video.....This disgusting behavior needs to be shared.

  15. In my small little feeble mind I think of the various muscle gods who do porn who could at least fight back. I often venture into unsure thoughts about the amount of pain they must go through when they do all sorts of sexual S&M stuff. I would love that these same gods would go over there and start targeting these same sickos who target lgbt folks on dating sites. Let our muscle gods with severe pain tolerance go over there and show those pricks what it feels like to be tied up and beaten till there piss runs bloody.

  18. This is the type of thing that used to happen here, without the phone vids taken, because there were no phone cams...

The police were often in on it, and literally, nobody cared. For decades this went on here.

The only difference is the tech has made it possible, if not simple, for people to easily film, and circulate it.

My point being, this is not merely something happening "over there", this is OUR past, too...

They are using this video to terrorize people, it's not entirely unlike the burning of crosses on people's front lawns.

I waited until my anger subsided before I wrote this.

I want the videos of these incidents, I want to FORCE the religious people, who hate us, here in the US, to WATCH them.

  19. I also wonder how much of this information is getting out over there? "We're" seeing it, but are young gay men seeing how they are being targeted through these sites? If it wasn't for sites like Towleroad or the Advocate would we see it? Not through our normal news, and they definitely won't be informed through theirs. That needs to be the first thing. Make sure all these young men know that these sites have now become too dangerous to use.

There's just no words for this. A dark age over there has fallen. Can someone send this link to Johnny Weir.

  20. Once again, do not go to Russia!!

    Posted by: billmiller | Sep 14, 2013 8:36:17 AM

  21. Gays in Russia should start arming themselves and murdering their attackers. Then they won't be attacking anyone every again.

  22. Gay people everywhere need to learn to defend themselves and give as good as they get. Martial arts, weapons, whatever it takes. To hell with pacifism and turn the other cheek. It's a war.

  23. it gets scarier and scarier. anyone who claims the world is in a moral crisis is right. its just that its being caused by mobs of small minded hyper-religious zombies who lack the sense to question anything as opposed to the LGBT community. anything a little different in their world sets off a primitive fear response. gays are the target of the day but in reality this kind of behavior can be applied to anything deemed to be a threat to the larger group of idiots.

  24. the very thing that should bring humanity together is what is pulling it apart. religion shouldn't pit one human being against another, it should bring us all together because of our shared goals of making the world a better place for all. but that takes thinking and creativity when its easier being told what to do. and blame others instead of taking responsibility for others.

  25. Good moments to date in Russia. Fascism in full force, here it comes. Will be nice to see whose the next minority target, now oblivious to the gays drama. Too late.
