Gay Toronto Mayoral Candidate George Smitherman's Husband Reported Missing

Smitherman

Toronto police are asking the public for assistance in the search for Christopher Peloso, the husband of Toronto mayoral candidate George Smitherman, who was last seen Monday afternoon in the area of Davenport Road and Bathurst Street.

PelosoAs Towleroad readers may recall, Smitherman married Peloso six years ago, when he was the first openly gay member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) and the first openly gay cabinet minister. In 2010 they were approved to adopt a boy. They have since adopted another girl.

Wrote Smitherman on Facebook: "I regret to confirm that Christopher Peloso has been missing from our home for almost 24 hours. Michael, Kayla and myself, with the support of family and friends, are hopeful that our husband and father will be home safely soon."

Wrote the Toronto Police in a release:

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance locating a missing man.

Christopher Peloso, 39, was last seen on Monday, September 9, 2013, at 4 p.m., in the Davenport Road/Bathurst Street area.

He is described as white, 5'8", 150 lbs., with brown eyes and short, light-brown hair. He was wearing a dark-blue jacket with a hood, tan-coloured cargo shorts, and blue flip-flops.

Police are concerned for his safety.

  2. Almost zero information in that bulletin. Was he kidnapped, did he leave on his own volition, or is he disoriented?

  3. @enough. maybe they don't know?

  4. Interesting, in almost all his online pics he looks uncomfortable, with a tight smile. It's been reported he has some 'medical' issues, whatever that means. Also, their home in Toronto was put up and listed for sale this week but the sign out front has since been taken down.

I don't understand how law enforcement handles a missing adult case. Adults are emancipated and free do go 'missing' if they choose.

  5. You wouldn't understand, Ratbastard, because no one cares enough about you to report you missing.

  6. @ RATBASTARD: Having a tight smile in online pictures doesn't necessarily mean anything. He may just be uncomfortable having his picture taken; I know I usually am. As for handling missing adult cases, they generally wait 24 hours after the person is reported missing, then treat them like any other missing person case.

  7. @ratbastard - The picture seems to be an institutional one, such as a drivers license or employer ID. How do YOU look on your drivers license, I wonder?

  9. My point about missing adults is there may be nothing wrong with him at all, except he wants to drop out for a while for whatever personal reason. Adults do have the right to just 'disappear' if they want to, it's not illegal in and of itself. Mr. Smitherman would be well advised to hire a private investigator, which he may already have done. Police action will be minimal.

    @Crispy,

Relax, boss. Try and control your natural impulse to be nasty.

  10. @Ratbastard, if you "don't understand how law enforcement handles a missing adult case", what makes you so knowledgeable that "police action will be minimal"?

Smitherman lives in Toronto and has wealth, political influence and connections. I'm sure there will be plenty of police action. That said, there's no reason he couldn't hire a private investigator as well.

  11. @RJ,

So, he'll receive special above and beyond treatment from the police? Must be nice I guess.

  12. It's not illegal for ANYone to go missing from their domestic life. Police don't look for missing people for the purpose of arresting them. They do it to find them. Once anyone is reported missing for 48 hours (generally) the police must try to locate the missing person and determine if they safe. But they do not intervene in the situation or try to bring them home.

  13. @ratbastard: you're the kind of person who pisses on public toilet seats and leaves it there for the next guy to sit on, aren't you?

  14. Christopher Peloso has been found alive. The article I saw (in the Toronto Sun) was very short and didn't go into detail, but a tweet from Smitherman said he's in the hospital now.

  15. Glad he was found safe, maybe he's diabetic and takes insulin... if he forgot to take it, he could easily have slipped into a coma or lost consciousness.

  16. @Ratbastard ... Yes, the wealthy and powerful always get special treatment. Why are you acting surprised?

  17. He was found curled up in the grass beside a fence alongside a railway track. He was "dishevelled" and obviously in some distress. The reason for reporting him missing was that it was uncharacteristic for him to just disappear overnight for no apparent reason.

One of the reasons that this is of public interest is that Smitherman was deputy premier and health minister for Ontario before he quit that to run for mayor of Toronto. He is very well-known in Ontario.
