Trans Student Can't Run for Homecoming King, Says PA School: VIDEO

Casey Karon, a transgender Pennsylvania teen, has been told by his school district that he can't run for Homecoming King, NBC Philadelphia reports:

Caron, a senior at Richland High School in Johnstown, Pa., was told he could not be put on the ballot for homecoming king because his gender was listed as female on his driver's license. The 17-year-old identifies as male and plans to undergo gender reassignment surgery in the future.

When the high school administration denied Caron's request, he appealed to the school board. Caron argued that his driver's license had since been changed to reflect his identifying gender.

During a meeting Monday evening, the Richland School Board decided not to take up the appeal and deferred to the earlier decision by school administration.

Karon added that there are other decisions ahead as well:

He's asked to be sat on the male side of the stage during graduation in the spring and be allowed to wear blue graduation garb, which is provided to male graduates.

Caron is also seeking the creation of a Gay-Straight Alliance at the high school and has asked that gender identity be added to the school's anti-discrimination policy.

  1. This story is very konfusing.

  2. He looks like a butch lesbian. Not quite a man. Is it accurate to call a "man" who still has a vagina a transgender? If no "trans" (crossing genders) is involved via surgury or hormones yet?

If she identifies as a guy -- and wants to take another guy, I guess we'd support that, too.

I'm just having fun with gender possibilities, here :)

  3. Doesn't matter what the kid looks like, if he identifies (sees himself) as a man in a woman's body, he has every right to run for Prom King. YOU have a voice. Send an email to the school. Inundate the Board of Director's with your complaint that Casey should have the right to run for Prom King. Go here:

  4. Will, he identifies as a male, and is probably presenting as male as he can, although of course how well he fits the box society calls "guy" shouldn't really determine the pronouns and all that. Given that he's still in HS, it's quite possible he has had little to no hormones or even puberty blockers, depending on if he came out early enough for those to be effective. What's in someone's pants doesn't really come up in a public setting, so it's not germane to pronouns and all that. If you have any more questions I'll be glad to answer as best I can :)

  5. It is telling that DrDonna needs to come here to answer basic questions about transgender. The very fact that she has to do this is convincing evidence that LGBs are not one people with Ts. While there are some differences among Ls Gs and Bs, we all share a common defining trait. We don't have to have someone come in to answer basic Homosexual 101 questions about our sexual orientation. But with Ts, we get an apparatchik like DrDonna to explain it all for us because, fundamentally, LGBs and Ts are 2 different groups, forced together by ideologues for ideological reasons. Indeed, T itself is not one group but an umbrella term for many different groups and some of those groups object to being forced into the term transgender.

I wish this student well. I hope everything works out. But this has nothing to do with being gay, lesbian, or bi. LGBs are not incomplete and we do not need Ts to make us whole. Unless the above student identifies as gay or bi, there is no reason for this story to be here on Towleroad.

  6. Caron is simply a girl with a butch hair -cut. Nuff said. He will never be able to produce sperm. Nuff said

  7. Hey Brian, so an impotent guy isn't really a guy? An infertile woman isn't really a woman?

  8. And Brian P is just a bigot filled with ignorance. Nuff said. He will never be able to have compassion for people with different life experiences. Nuff said.

  9. I'm a gay man who proudly stands next to my transgender brothers and sisters. A basic lack of empathy is why we have to fight so hard for our rights. How quick we are to dismiss another minority.

  10. Ben, I disagree. The fundamental binding factor among LGBT people is that we operate outside the norms of expected gender behavior. Society expects men to be big and strong and grow beards and like women. Gay men don't fit that last part, and trans folks don't fit the first part. This is why historically trans and LGB folks have been together, and it's only very recently that a certain loud minority (almost entirely composed of LG folks) have been saying things should be different.

  11. @ "It is telling that DrDonna needs to come here to answer basic questions about transgender."

THEDRDONNA comes here to anwer questions because some folks here say some very stupid things about Transfolk--including me. I don't mind being corrected if I respect who's doing the correctin'.

My generation would have simply said that Caron is a butch Lesbian. Now I know that we were very simple-minded on the subject.

It's telling that many in my generation found it quite easy to refer to (what we now call) Transwomen as "she", but it was difficult for many of us to call a Transman "he". Still a twisted form of misogyny: allowing a Transman's biological gender status stop us from respecting the gender identity that is now normal for him .

  12. Little girl, you are no man and you will never be a man or be acknowledged as such by those of us who really are men.

You are a confused little girl who could not hold her own in a scuffle with even the wimpiest of real men.

Get some psychiatric help--you need it really badly.

  16. There are some female to male transgender who look very masculine- this must be very difficult situation- in some ways I think male to female tran people have it easier. And hey let's not be so mean this is a teenager and WE all know how difficult that can be for gay people.

  17. Kids are such a pain in the ass, these days. What with their wanting to be treated the same as everybody else and stuff.

@RICK: What the Hell would you know about being a man, chumpnut?

@BEN: How about you go LGB yourself. Right up your fat, LGBing ass.

  18. DrDonna:

A community isn't built based on the expectations or prejudices of others. What you claim "society" expects is constantly changing. I don't think that your description of society's expectations has been accurate for the last 30 years, and even if it were, it might not be accurate tomorrow. LGBs are a community today, tomorrow and forever based on a common trait, not on the ever-shifting opinions of straight people.

    Posted by: Ben | Sep 26, 2013 11:57:24 PM

  19. Ben: You're entitled to your opinion. I disagree, regarding how society views GSM folks. Also, by your logic, bi folk should be separate from LG folk, because they don't limit their romantic partners based on gender. We're both trying to define the limits, yours are just more stringent than mine. And, regardless, you're not a contributor or decision maker for the site, so why do you feel the need to complain about the stories they post? You're not required to read them.

  22. LGBT. Who added the "T"? Where was that meeting held? Was it voted on? It's the ball and chain of LGB.
