Jared Leto Discusses His Transsexual Character In 'Dallas Buyers Club' - VIDEO

Jar

Jared Leto stopped by Conan O'Brien's show last night to share what it was like playing a transsexual character, Rayon, in the upcoming film Dallas Buyers Club. The film also stars Matthew McConnaughey as a cowboy struggling with HIV and Jennifer Garner as a doctor helping administer the then new drug, AZT.

On the transformation into Rayon:

RayonJARED: It was intense. I mean I lost between 30 and 40 pounds, was wearing high heels every day and as you can see, tons of other things as well. I waxed my entire body. My eyebrows included. But it was kind of nice. It was a period piece so I didn't have to do Brazilian, you know?

CONAN: That's right, it takes place in 1986.

JARED: Not exactly a 70's bush.

On the on-set reaction to his character:

JARED: I mean it's interesting, funny as I look around the set and see some of the guys working here. It was always like the biggest, toughest guy who was the first to offer his hand to me.

CONAN: Like they opened doors to you?

JARED: Or asked me to dinner. Stuff like that.

  5. Lol Litper so every guy with long hair is a girl? From Axl Rose to Hulk Hogan to Ozzie Osbourne?!!!

    You're a nut job.

  6. Lit per likes to post here and on Queerty about how bad trans folk are. Sounds like he(?)'s got something he really needs to prove.

  7. @Rowan, just like every guy with huge breasts is a girl...

  8. @Jackie, i just want the T thing to have its own space. Just above we have a story how homophobes are again confusing G with T. There's no T in G. No lipstick, no dresses, no highheels. This is not Transroad!

I wish Andy would require some registration for commenting. The trolling on TR makes visiting the site a less than enjoyable experience.

  10. Somebody please tell me Rayon's full name is Rayon Darning?

    Posted by: rdiac | Oct 19, 2013 2:41:35 PM

  11. @QJ201, that's good, so maybe you T thing will find your own place and stop infesting the gay sites with effeminacy!

    Posted by: litper | Oct 19, 2013 2:55:45 PM

  12. OMG effeminacy! Obviously Litper needs to prove that his own insecure form of masculinity is the only type that gay men can display. How sad.

  13. I'm with you Litper. We need to fight the myth that all LGBs are down with this ridiculous decision to link being gay with being a transsexual. Whenever this comes up with my friends, there is never a single one who defends it.

    Posted by: Chase | Oct 19, 2013 4:22:34 PM

  14. @Chase, it wasn't a "decision", the trans community is an outgrowth of the LGB community. Before transitioning was really possible, trans folks were just lumped in under "gay".

And anecdotal evidence about how your friends are just as down on trans folks as you are means basically nothing.

  15. they can change their sex now, they don't want to be "filthy" gays, we gays don't want them too. Transsexuality is against homosexuality. Why do you think Iran opays for sex change operation but executes openly gay people?

    Posted by: litper | Oct 20, 2013 12:31:05 AM

  16. @Litper: Because they're a brutal regime and they make arbitrary rules based on shifting interpretations of a millennia-old text. You're the one using the rd filthy, why are you ascribing that to trans folks? You've made no claims with any basis in fact, logic, or sound reasoning.

  17. Hey, that's not the real MateoM. I guess Rick/Jason wasn't clever enough to come up with new face names to hide behind that he had to steal from others. Isn't Litper, Hagatha, Brian, Chase, Adam and Kev C enough?! Honestly won't Andy change the comments format so that one demented troll can't take over the site through the use of almost a dozen different usernames?

I think we're all tired of the homophobic, transphobic, racist, and misogynist rants of Rick or whoever he chooses to be on this site. Enough is enough. I wish the real MateoM were here to call Rick out on his crap.

  18. Tyler, don't be upset, just accept the fact that most gay men are not fine with idea of being mixed with trans women, and we're really getting tired of it.

    Posted by: litper | Oct 20, 2013 10:32:24 AM

  19. looks like somebody's gonna be up for an academy award.

And can you produce some sort of statistical study that supports this claim that "most" gay men aren't okay with trans women? Produce legitimate studies or STFU... you don't speak for me (or most of the posters here, evidently.)
