Russian Ballet Dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov Blasts Persecution of LGBT People

BaryshnikovIn a statement to the No More Fear Foundation, a group that works to help LGBT people seeking refuge and asylum in the U.S., 65-year-old Russian ballet dancer and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov has denounced discrimination and persecution of those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.

Baryshnikov does not address Russia directly but given his background it's clear his message is directed at his homeland.

Said Baryshnikov:

"My life has been immensely enriched by gay mentors, colleagues and friends and any discrimination and persecution of gay people is unacceptable. Equal treatment of people is a basic right and it is sad that we still have to even speak about this in [the] 21st century. I salute NO MORE FEAR foundation for stepping in so quickly to provide the much necessary assistance to gay and lesbian people who are fleeing prosecution and help them lead a proud life in their new country."

  6. Mikhail' Baryshnikov said nothing about transgenders, and yet Andy Towle gratuitously added the 'transgender' notion into Mikhail's statement. Have you really come to this, Andy?

  7. @ "Gabe R L" Really? Someone makes a noble gesture that benefits your community, and that kind of comment is his reward? Dude...

  8. I'd hardly call this a "Blast." Sounds more like something that Anderson Cooper would say.

  9. Booka: Unfortunately that's daily work here or in other gay sites like queerty (fortunately not everywhere).
You read comments and you see actors, singers, athletes, etc being bashed for not coming out, but after coming out their are bashed anyway.
Some people are really hard to please (fortunately nobody cares about them)

  10. He defected to Canada in 1974 (according to Wiki). Of course not for being gay.

  12. Admirable! BTW, Baryshnikov isn't Russian, he's Latvian.

  13. Is it me or does he look like he could star along side Clint Eastwood in a gritty action movie now? All kidding aside this is a bold statement and much respect to the guy.

  14. ADRENAN P: I see nothing about transgender people in Andy's quote of Mr. Baryshnikov, so it makes me wonder why you have a problem with transgender people also being treated equally?

  15. Baryshnikov is Russian, born to Russian parents. They lived in Riga, Latvia, when he was born, and he spent his childhood and early youth there, but that doesn't change their Russian ethnicity. At the time, Latvia was a part of the Soviet Union and many Russians lived in parts of the Soviet Union that were outside of Russia.

  16. Adrenan P, I have only one thing to say to you? WFT? Do you really want to be a big assh*le?

  17. Adrenan, you're a prick. "Transgender" was a word invented by the USA, and you're gonna blast a Russian for not using the word? He probably doesn't even know it exists. Because of America's idiocy, LGBT will probably become LGBTRSHUMWDXQP in a few years just like the potato chip aisle at the store went from 4 names to 4000.

  18. Booka and Jjose712: Don't get your petticoats in a bunch, precious ones. I was joking, just ac little humor trying to offset the somberness of the poster and the first commenters who were like "Oh my God, another [supposed] ally for us! Damn, people are uptight.

  19. West is looking for an excuse to discredit Russia that did with the Soviet Union? SU was destroyed by West. Today the standard of living in Russia is less much lower while crime is much higher. But the moron that protects f@gs is does not matter all but fиcked in the as$.I am pleased to see how the American people morally degraded. I hope that one day it will be so many gay people will start to deteriorate and America will collapse as it was with ancient Greece, ancient Rome and Japan.
