Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance: Find an Event

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, and around the country memorials and vigils are being held to mark the many victims of anti-trans violence.

NettlesThere is a full list here.

And if you would like a list of the stunning number of identified victims of anti-trans violence since last November, you can find it here.

The organizers write: "The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved. Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.

For those of you here in NYC, here's the info on tonight's vigil:

  1. Keep strong. With each day the culture of ignorance and bigotry is being taken down, brick by brick.

  2. This is where the line between Gay and Transgender doesn't exist. There are Gay people who have been murdered for being gender role non-conforming right-- along with Transgender folks. It's been that way for many years.

    I'll leave it at that.

  3. And it's incredible. I didn't know this was the day to remember Transfolk who were murdered for being who they are, but yesterday I watched "Boys Don't Cry". I had the day off (well, I called in sick)-- That's why you all were spared my big mouth.

But that's what I watched on a VHS copy I had: "Boys Don't Cry" Hillary Swank was magnificent.

Ergo, we should adopt the views of murderers and lump the 2 groups together.

What murderers think: the basis of a true community.

  6. There's community in adversity, that is pretty true. The murderers themselves aren't important, it's the societal attitudes that motivated them. Attitudes like misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia. All three are at work in most of these situations.

  7. So what if some shims got murdered? People get murdered all the time for what they are. Where's the black day of remembrance or the women' s day of remembrance or the gay day of remembrance? And those groups all face murder in much higher numbers than a bunch of crossdressers in bad wigs. This just sounds like more tranny melodramatics. It's just an attempt to make themselves seam like they belong with the LGB so they can be the little parasites we know they are.

I mean, 200 and something people in the ENTIRE world killed in a year? Wow, reallby persecuted there. They probably had to include guys with crossdressing fetishes just to get over a hundred.
