'Duck Dynasty' Premiere Ratings Down 28 Percent After Anti-Gay Controversy

Dynasty

Duck Dynasty returned to A&E last night for its fifth season, and the ratings are down following controversy over Phil Robertson's anti-gay remarks, EW reports:

Wednesday night’s Duck Dynasty season 5 premiere had 8.5 million viewers. That’s huge for a cable reality show, but down 28 percent from its record-setting fourth season debut in August (11.8 million). It’s also slightly down from the show’s third season premiere in February last year (8.6 million). A&E notes the number up slightly from the fourth season finale on Oct. 23 (though obviously it’s standard to compare premieres to premieres).

Robertson was placed on a short hiatus following the remarks and got a scolding from A&E and a few sponsors, but didn't end up losing a single one for his statements in GQ, in which he said homosexual sinners were going to hell like terrorists, prostitutes, and drunks.

  1. It comes on at the same time as the Klan rally.

  2. Wow. The exact opposite of what I expected to happen.

  3. I wouldn't get too excited. Aren't the ratings excellent anyways?

  5. STill strong...2nd highest show of the night on tv (behind Idol), and just ahead of Modern Family.

  6. Strong, yes, but down 28 percent

  7. Well, what the hell do they do? They just out in the Louisiana swamp to shoot, piss and sh.t?

  8. Still one of the highest rated shows so don't celebrate too much.

  9. It's stilly hugely successful but it's nice to know 30% of their viewers had a conscience at least, especially with my expectations for the shows ratings to increase.

  10. We shouldn't forget that it wasn't just an anti-gay controversy.

It was an anti-gay, racist, pro-molestation controversy.

Even if the show is still "strong" by today's standards, any slip in ratings will be reason enough to replace it. TV's "golden age" is mostly filled with urine, but those who like urine probably prefer it without pus and other discharge.

  11. Sponsors Include:

HOME DEPOT (DIY Big Box Store)
DARDEN RESTAURANTS (Olive Garden, Red Lobster)
    UNDER ARMOUR (Under Clothing)
    SKYJACKER (Truck Suspensions)*
    WALMART (Major Retailer)
    CRACKER BARREL (Restaurant)

    * Christian Company proud of Phil's stand.

It's sad to see Home Depot on this list, I was already boycotting the rest of them.

  12. The Dynasty of Fetid Dicks will eventually make viewers vomit.

  13. The show likely lost viewers to American Idol. Plus it's ratings have been slipping since the middle of last season anyway. Looks like Duck Dynasty has gone from a consistent 10-12 million views to about a consistent 8-9 million.

The controversy probably hurt the show but I doubt all those or more than a slight majority at most, stopped watching Duck Dynasty because of Phil Robertson's comments.

  14. It'll get old and eventually lose its appeal like Honey Boo Boo. And whatever happened to that show? It used to be the reality TV series du jour.

  15. I'm pretty surprised with this. I expected a good rise after so much publicity

  16. The crap the the old guy spouted does not bother me (you expect a redneck to talk out their ass, that's what ignorant bible thumping redneck's do)as much as the guy with the American flag bandanna.

A check of his biography on line says bupkis of his ever serving in the military. A real chicken hawk that one is. Cowards love to hide behind the flag.

  18. I think Duck Dynasty beat the premire of IDOL.....They went up against each other so that is probably why they lost some viewers....Ducks Dynasty is the funniest show ever.... Hollywood has never created such amazing characters...And Phil is one of the best role models ever.... He follows the scriptures, admits when he has not followed God and wants no one to perish and everyone to be saved...That's called LOVE

  19. And who watches this stuff anyway?!

    Posted by: jarago | Jan 16, 2014 5:24:31 PM

  20. And it will only get worse.

The truth behind this contrived 'reality' show has been revealed. Rich country club set pretending to be a backwoods southern family. Now the country knows the clan leader is a racist, misogynist, homophobe.

Southerners with minds & hearts aren't fooled. They have gay relatives and 15 year old daughters.

  21. If we keep the fire under their butts, people will come around and the ratings will tumble and those hicks will be out on their asses.

  22. This is the beginning of the end for Duck Dynasty - they have been revealed to be the ugly, narcissistic, vain, preening, greedy, grubby, guttersnipes who pimp out their family, their faith for a blessed buck. Anyone with an education saw them for the ugly lazy frauds they were from the start. Only a government-check-getting conservative - and is there any other kind - could watch a bunch of half-men - and the desperately unhappy women married to them -- sitting around doing nothing while getting paid and think that was entertainment.

  23. Dont celebrate too much yet. Every show has its ups and downs. To me, this is not staying long. Come on, ignorance always wins at the end. Their target demo isn't going to get affected by this controversy. If at all, it will boost them even higher.

  24. So a lot less people want to watch rich, white country club bigots masquerading as simple country folk. Good start.
