Former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie to Challenge Virginia's Mark Warner in U.S. Senate Bid: VIDEO

Gillespie

Former RNC Chair, Romney advisor, Bush counselor and lobbyist for Enron and big tobacco has announced that he's running for U.S. Senate in Virginia against Democratic Senator Mark Warner.

Politico reports:

Three of Gillespie’s frequent themes will be: growing the middle class, fostering upward mobility and helping people lift themselves out of poverty.

Gillespie’s first task will be winning the Republican nomination at a convention in Roanoke in June. That’s an insider’s game where his longtime party involvement should pay off. After serving as national party chairman, he led the Virginia GOP.

  1. Perhaps Liz Cheney should have another go at it in her other home state of Virginia.

  2. I find it odd you omit the fact he is gay. I'm sure most people on your site know this fact but a paragraph on how he was involved with the Bush team during some very anti-gay campaigning and policy implemenation should be pointed out as well as including the fact he came out as gay after that time and what he has done positively and negatively toward the greater gay community is necessary in this article. Just seems as though the ommission of such pertinent information was done so intentionally and if not, don't cut and paste from other articles without including facts the majority of your readership would want and need to know.

  3. Well, we will see just how gullible the citizens of Virginia are... they up until recently didn't have a great track record. Ed Gullespie? Good grief...

  5. Yes, someone who has been a lobbyist for Enron and the tobacco industry is the perfect person to help people out of poverty and give them a better chance at a new life. I don't care if he's gay or not.

  6. @Dan,

I cannot find any reference to Ed Gillespie coming out as gay. I believe you are referring to Ken Melhman, who is also a former RNC chairman.

  8. Ed Gillespie is not gay. I've known him and his family all of my life. His younger sister is gay, but he is not.

  9. Dan, he's not Ken Mehlman!

  10. Good grief- I hope Warner drops the hammer on him. Lying big tobacco, lying Enron and lying RNC??? I don't actually think George W Bush was a liar so much as a complete idiot- and a useful idiot for the neocons and war profiteers who led him anywhere they chose.

  11. As others have pointed out, it's the loathsome traitor to our community, Ken Mehlmann, who is gay. Gillespie, however, is also odious.

I find it odd, however, that a gay site would announce Gillespie's candidacy with not a mention of his long history of support for anti-gay discrimination under the law (made all the more disgusting since he apparently has a lesbian sister). Seems like information people should have.

  12. Gillespie won't get the nomination. The Tea Party will sink his candidacy. He's considered an "establishment Republican", a "RINO". Plus, he's viewed with suspicion by the evangelical effluvia that populates the Tea Party.

  13. Rumor has it Cuccinelli is also considering running. Will be nice to watch the two of them tear each other apart and leave Mark Warner to sail to victory.
