  5. It is so young at this point, it would probably do that in any sitution. We really don't see it interacting with the snow or even recognizing it in any way.

  7. I'm pretty sure he's saying, "I should be playing in the snow in the wild. Let me outta this prison!!!"

He's adorable, but zoos disgust me.

  11. Adorable but sad. Their habitat is in danger of disappearing. It may be that the only way they'll survive are in zoos.

  12. Considering this polar bear was born in captivity and rejected by its mother, if released into the wild it would be dead in a week. Its parents, for the record, were brought to the zoo as orphaned cubs after their own mothers were killed by hunters. The mothers typically spend two years with their cubs teaching them to hunt seals. Losing a mother at that age is a death sentence.

People who say silly things like "zoos disgust me" are incredibly shortsighted. Polar bears are in considerable danger due to climate change. Zoos like this one are doing much needed work studying and understanding their reproductive biology, the results of which will be used to aid their conservation in the wild.

  18. WHAT IS SO "CUTE" ABOUT ALBINO ANIMALS????????? ...."WHITE" ANIMALS ARE NOT NATURAL IN NATURE....IN NATURE...WHEN AN ANIMALS IS BORN TO A -NON---- ALBINO...THE MOTHER WILL KILL THEM!!! IT IS ONLY WHITE PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY ARE "CUTE" AND GO RESCUE THEM.....

  19. @ Shannon.

A polar bear's fur isn't actually "white", it's clear. Polar bears are not considered albino because their skin is black.

The reason why a polar bear's fur seems white is because the light from the sun is white light. When it falls on the fur, it is refracted and reflected by the individual elements in all directions. This is called scattering. Some of the scattered light comes out towards the observer and as the light was white going in, it is white coming out. Consequently masses of small transparent objects appear white because they scatter white light.
