State Investigation: Oregon Baker Unlawfully Discriminated Against Gay Couple

Sweetckaes

Sweet Cakes by Melissa, the Oregon baker who refused to bake a cake for a gay couple's wedding, were protested heavily, and closed up shop late last year after being the target of a state investigation, have been found guilty by that investigation of unlawfully discrimination, The Oregonian reports.

The state will now oversee a conciliation process between the two parties to see if a settlement can be reached. If not, the labor bureau may pursue charges before an administrative law judge...

...Herbert Grey, the Beaverton attorney representing bakery owners Aaron and Melissa Klein, said the investigation’s outcome was expected. He said the Kleins will participate in the conciliation process, but are maintaining their original stance.

The Kleins have contended they weren't discriminating against the couple, who were customers in the past. Instead, they say they were practicing their Constitutional right to religious freedom. They have said baking a cake for a same-sex wedding would violate their Christian beliefs.

CakeThe couple asked for prayers from supporters on their Facebook page following the decision, writing:

To all of you that have been praying for Aaron and I, I want to say thank you. I know that your prayers are being heard. I feel such a peace with all of this that is going on. Even though there are days that are hard and times of struggle we still feel that the Lord is in this. It is His fight and our situation is in His hands. We received papers from BOLI yesterday and they have made their decision that we have apparently discriminated. From what we have gathered we now have to wait to find out what the fines will be within 60 days. I can't say much more but will update when I'm able to. Please continue to pray for our family. God is great, amazing and all powerful. I know He has a plan

  1. Is Sweet Cakes a gay icon?

  2. It's a f*cking cake. You don't have to get gay married, or even show up for the event.

Pull your Jesus-pityfest out of your ass and move on.

  3. They're realllllllllyyyyyyyy desperate with their excuses. Yeah. The Lord totes has a planz for a couple that bake cakes. Cakes4Jeebus. Right.

They have 'religious freedom' to not bake a cake, eh? Does that mean a Christian can not sell condoms to someone, because selling them condoms "infringes on their religion" Could a kosher-observing person refuse to sell a Gentile pork products?

Keep praying, folks. Keep on praying.

  4. Jesus said no sweet cakes for same sex weddings, right? Isn't that in the Bible - the New Testament? C'mon, you're quoting scripture to support your anti-gay position, correct? No?? Then it's NOT a Christian belief but just blatant homophobic bigotry, you f**k wads!

  5. @Little Kiwi - For years, some pharmacists have insisted on a "religious right" not to dispense emergency contraception. I'm still waiting for the lawsuit by Christian Science paramedics, who insist on a "religious right" to pray over accident victims rather than use medicine, and the Jehovah's Witness emergency room tech who insists on a "religious right" not to give blood transfusions.

Or for that matter, shop owners who claim a "religious right" not to serve people of different races or religions.

  6. RE:"It is His fight and our situation is in His hands." and "God is great, amazing and all powerful. I know He has a plan"

So they are blind to His plan for them to stop hating.

  7. to paraphrase Carrie White, "That's not even in the bible, it doesn't say that anywhere"

  8. Again, this time with more feeling:

    It's a FREAKING cake!

It's not a gay cake, you don't have to go to the wedding, there isn't pictures of gay sex on the cake, you don't have to even approve of anything gay.

You only needed to bake the damn cake, take their money and move on!

    The stupid, it burns.

  10. Imagine this in the same light as the tux shop, the photographer, the people who make the buttons on the shirts, the people who sell the beverages being served, the people doing the flowers, etc... it goes on and on.

Imagine all of these people refusing to sell their wares to this gay couple getting married on the grounds that they "don't condone gay marriage".

    It's insane!!!

  11. Aaron Klien is Christian? Like Jews for Jesus?

  12. I think God's lesson here is...not to discriminate. Seems like a pretty straight-forward message.

  13. it's mostly her you know...women hate gays with a passion...

    Posted by: Ankerich | Jan 20, 2014 11:08:29 AM

  14. Again....nowhere does the Bible condemn bakin a cake for a same sex couple. I would understand if the couple were asking them to engage in homosexual intercourse and the bakers objected. But that's not they were asking them to do.

Just a couple of bigots hiding behind the Bible.

  15. I refuse to pray for someone who doesn't know how to use the objective case.

  16. I can't find a single mention of wedding cakes in the Bible. Strange that all-knowing God didn't bother mentioning prohibitions against baking cakes anywhere in that book.

  17. Just posted this on their Facebook page:

I guarantee that you've made wedding cakes for straight "sinners" -- since you obviously don't delve into the private lives of your customers. So why are using the Bible to singling out gay people? I've also been told that all "sins" are equal. So I'm sure you'd refuse to make a wedding cake for a gluttonous straight couple, right?

  18. This looks like a publicity stunt (looking for more bible-thumper business) that seriously backfired.

  19. God had a plan?

Well, actually she DID have plan for you and your shop.

I believe she told you to sit down and shut up.

  20. Yep, he has a plan for you to pay a fine and probably close your business. Seems my prayers got answered.

  21. Plan, shman... you know what these self-righteous bigots are up to now: All those prayers they're seeking from the holy head-bobbers are code for "we are the victims, help us and our divine cause--send a check." Just wait a few weeks and watch.

    Nasty little haters...so predictable

  22. How many cocks have passed through Aarons hungry hole?

  23. Someone should have told them that the cake is served at the reception. It is just a big party after the wedding which may or may not have been a religious ceremony. They weren't asked to sign the wedding certificate, stand up for the couple at the ceremony, or even set foot in a church. They were asked to bake a cake for a frigging party - and they said no.

    The stupid, it burns.

Or in this case, it closes the business and it incurs fines.

Karma may be a bee-atch but she's an entertaining bee-atch.

  24. Lord, I pray that you help America rid itself of this christian evangelical effluvia, this christian fundamentalist filth, and restore sanity to our great nation.

  25. ah, yeah God has a plan for you that to remain a public business/accommodation, you MUST serve all and this is not a free speech issue or religious issue....it is a business issue only!
