IOC Defends Removal of Italian LGBT Activist Vladimir Luxuria from Sochi Olympic Village

Yesterday Towleroad reported that transgender former Italian MP and activist Vladimir Luxuria and her companions Pio and Amedeo, a duo who star in the Italian television program called Reservoir Dogs and call themselves the Hyenas, were removed from the Sochi Olympic village near the hockey arena.

Luxuria reported that they were hustled away and dumped in the countryside. Her spectator pass was also confiscated:

"I was very, very afraid this time because the first time they said, 'It's OK for the first time, don't do it again for the second time.' So, this time I was a little bit afraid," Luxuria said. "But they just left me outside, in the country, there, outside and that's it."

The International Olympic Committee is defending the actions of Sochi authorities, the AP reports:

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Tuesday that "what happened yesterday is still a little bit unclear," but said Luxuria had set out to demonstrate at the stadium.

"I know her stated aim to demonstrate in the venue and I believe after a couple of hours when she finally got to the venue I think she was escorted from there peacefully, not detained," Adams said.

He said Olympic Park and the venues are not the right place for demonstrations, and added: "We would ask anyone to make their case somewhere else."

Luxuria was wearing a rainbow outfit and shouting 'Gay is okay' in both Russian and English when she was apprehended.

According to Italian media reports, Luxuria and the two men were asked to leave the country and were to be escorted to the airport this morning at 11:30 am by the Russia Foreign Ministry.

  1. The IOC are a bunch of old Uncle Toms left over from the last century. What can you expect from these people?!

  2. Obviously the IOC is the enemy. We will not forget that they are the enemy and they will be sorry because the Olympics are becoming less and less relevant and they need LGBT support a lot more than they think they do.

  3. Thomas Bach and the members of the IOC need to be arrested for collaborating with Russia's crimes against humanity.

  5. ....and I'm still NOT watching NBC's Sochi Olympics coverage....

  6. Another reason - as if one were needed - to boycott this and all future Olympic Games as well as ALL of the global sponsors. LGBT people have been thrown under the bus in the name of profit and whatever these organisations might say (against the Russian law) after Sochi has wrapped up will be far too little and much too late!

  7. I am so glad to hear others proudly stating their position on boycotting the Games. Altho' I have missed the fun and competition, especially Charlie White and Meryl Davis' win yesterday, (it hit the news in the early morning and announced at every news break), I have refrained from watching having removed NBC from my viewing channels. I won't watch NBC again for their complicity with Russia in killing, maiming and jailing gay people. Don't get me started on the sponsors like Coke, P&G, etc. Furious with them.

  8. Actually, this dude sounds unhinged. He and the Russia authorities just might deserve each other.

  9. Is there any question that the main concern of the IOC members are their paychecks.

    It's not the athletes.

    It's not sport.

    It's keeping their jobs safe.

The IOC consists of spineless hacks.

Their failure to stand up for anybody's rights says it all.

  10. "We would ask anyone to make their case somewhere else."

Translation: please don't tarnish our precious, money making brand with your petty concerns about human rights.

  11. I guess they don't want me to watch Rio either... That's fine. Keep it up.

  12. All Out has a petition urging the IOC to require future Olympic host cities to not have anti-gay laws. Signing it certainly cannot hurt. If 100,000 signatures can be reached, All Out plans to have Olympic athletes themselves present it to the IOC.

    You can find it at:

    https://www.allout.org/en/actions/change-the-rules

Or you can look it up on-line by entering into search:

  13. "[The] Olympic Park and the venues are not the right place for demonstrations." Unless of course you're anti-gay and then you're welcome to hand out your anti-gay fliers speading known falsehoods about gays and hate.

    Anti-gay = Welcome
    Gay = Unwelcome

  14. The IOC does not care a flying f*ck about gay rights at all, and see us as an annoyance that they just want to 'go away'... They chose Russia and China where human rights are trampled, and just expect people to shut up about it. Well, I won't and neither should anyone with a shred of decency. They expect us to accept that they freely give despots a platform to spew hate and intolerance from? F*ck 'em, NO! SCREW the IOC.

  15. holding a rainbow flag is now considered a demonstration? YES, think of the children who might see it. Best to lock all Russian children inside with the windows shaded so they might never see a real rainbow think it a promotion to homosexuality. Putin wants return to the good old days when you just haul someone off and shoot them. Wait, I think those days have arrived.

  16. Don't you get the feeling that the IOC would have approved of the Nazis too.

    Posted by: jarago | Feb 18, 2014 5:50:54 PM

  17. The IOC DID approve the Nazis.

    These people are scum.
