Students Confront Australian PM Abbott: 'Why Are You So Against Legalizing Gay Marriage?' - VIDEO

Abbott

High school students from the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (a school in the suburbs of Sydney) confronted Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in a question and answer session on Friday about his opposition to same-sex marriage.

Asked one student, to wild cheers from the others:

"Why are you so against legalizing gay marriage?"

Abbott replied:

"Well look, I’m not against people having a wonderful relationship, I’m all in favor of people having loving, permanent relationships, but I guess it’s a definitional thing."

To which another student shouted, to more wild cheers:

"There's a lot of gay people in our school. I have a lot of gay friends, and it’s sad to think that they can’t get married just because they’re attracted to the same sex!"

Abbott, knowing he was defeated, moved on:

"I'm getting a clear message alright. Let's have a bloke's question."

Watch (questioning starts at around 2:30), AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. "Let's have a bloke's question."

I guess losing the first argument on discrimination against one group (gays) wasn't bad enough Abbott had to also show disrespect for the intelligence & dignity of another (females).

Not a good day for you Abbott. Good news is the kids are gonna be alright. Bravo Aussie Millennials!

  2. Even in conservative nations (not saying Australia is), millennials have dramatically different views than grown adults on this issue. Young people around the world have grown up with, around, and seeing LGBT people, and simply don't see what the big deal is about it. What's a fight now in countries like Australia (and America) won't be much of one in 20 years.

  3. Oh, and...these students are awesome and Abbott is an ass.

  4. Wow, he was just completely outclassed by these kids in every way. Brought a knife to a gunfight. LOL. Glad to see kids actually caring about this stuff and hope they run for office on day.

  5. This is the kind of politician Australians need to vote out office and keep out of office.

  6. What a condescending idiot! His responses were pathetic. Aussies deserve better!

Those kids were brilliant asking smart thought provoking arguments on all of the questions asked. Well done.

    Abbott is a squirmy @@$hole.

  7. Today's kids are amazing. They don't buy into hate & discrimination and are much more prone to speak up against them. They're fearless.

Look at the pics from the 50's and 60's about racial discrimination and you'll see a much different young generation than today's.

I credit technology and the infosphere. We've armed them with the information that not only allows them to evaluate the misinformation they've been told but also the ability to offer the right counterarguments.

  9. I hope they make their voices heard by registering to vote and then actually voting.

And it wouldn't hurt to take a parent or two along.

  10. Heard Sheryl Sandberg the other day talking about how girls are often (not so) subtly discouraged from asserting themselves and taking leadership roles, and how conversely boys are often encouraged to be assertive.

On the surface, at least, this dovetails perfectly with the point she was making. And it wasn't even remotely subtle.

Abbott got schooled by school kids.

  11. Frickin Abbott, he's such a douchenozzle on all topics. He's up there with GW

  12. Abbott is Australia's version of George W. Bush--an inarticulate idiot. Since we Americans elected Bush first, I guess we can't feel superior to the Australians for having elected this numskull. But why didn't Australians learn from America's mistake?

  13. @james st James. In australia not voting is illegal. They will pretty much all vote when they turn 18.

  14. Yeah, we Millennials are pretty awesome. At least until the other generations attack us in some other thread...

  15. This shows that the upcoming generation of Australians will bring the politicians into line into what society wants! Way to go kids!

  16. Why do all of Australia's leaders seem like such douchebags?!?! What is up with the country "down under"?

    This Abbott ogre is saying:

Womens' questions are a waste of my time... where are the straight guys who won't ask
    any questions about fags.

This is the CLASSIC straight white male type of bullying that says women are inferior citizens. That straight white males stand atop the totem of the social hierarchy because they have the power and the willingness to bully others to remain there. The women, the gays, the ethnic minorities the straight men who are not bullies... need to vote together against this type of absurd politics.

  17. The arsonist LOVES fire. They can't help it, they were just born this way.
But they must not burn all things and have controll over there desire.
    3-6% Abomination of life.
The painful scar of realizing your gay as you come of Knowing age(around 13) will carry a burning imprint deep in your mind forever.
It does, and it might not, hurt at first. But time is against you.It will catch up to you and eat you up inside. It's like a direct hit to your sternum. An ongoing war within you as you deal with the rest of the 94% population.
How long can you last? Brainwashed into believing your own lies. Telling yourself over and over it's O.K. You lie to yourself when you KNOW deep within somethings not RIGHT.
Make it quick.End your torment. You don't need this pain. People will understand and you will finilly be at REST.
