Arizona Governor Jan Brewer Makes Big Announcement: VIDEO

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will not run for reelection, the announced on Wednesday, CNN reports:

Her announcement comes amid questions about whether she could legally seek another four years in office.

As Arizona secretary of state in 2009, Brewer automatically succeeded Janet Napolitano as governor when the Democrat became President Barack Obama's homeland security secretary. Arizona is one of a few states without a lieutenant governor.

Brewer sought and won a full term in 2010 and hadn't ruled out trying again.

But Arizona law dictates that a governor can't run for more than two consecutive terms, and a partial term is counted as a full term. In other words, Brewer's time in office before she was elected in 2010 would count as a full four-year term.

Watch her make the announcement, AFTER THE JUMP...

Brewer vowed to work until the last minute: "Both my pen and my veto stamp have plenty of ink."

  2. Given the way Arizona has been leaning, I suspect that her successor will probably be worse than even her.

  5. She couldn't run again but she felt the need to announce that she wasn't running because she couldn't?

I agree, with the way Arizona has been they'll just put someone worse in her seat. Here's hoping for the miracle that they sober up and realize they are an embarrassment to the rest of the country.

  6. She had to announce this because she's been hinting for 2 years now that she was trying to find a way around the law so she could run again.

Don't be shocked when she announces her run for a Senate seat.

  7. Big whoop Jan. You're only allowed two terms so even if you had a hankerin' to hang around the Arizona statehouse for another couple'a years ya can't do it sweetums. Nice empty gesture though.

  8. Plus, the key word is "consecutive." It's been written elsewhere that she could always rear her ugly head again after another four years.

But gosh, she can't even do a simple speech like this without haphazardly reading it from a script. RME.

  9. From what I understand, there is still some ill will in Democratic circles directed at Janet Napolitano for walking out on Arizona after being reelected Governor in 2006. Napolitano was well aware of what a Jan Brewer administration would bring to the state, but took the homeland security post anyway.
