Irish Footballer Ger Brennan Thanks Team Boyfriends For Support In Championship Speech: VIDEO

Ger_brennan

In what could have easily been overlooked as a passing comment, Ger Brennan — captain of the St. Vincent’s All Ireland club football team — thanked the team’s girlfriends and boyfriends for their support during the grueling championship tournament.

It’s a big deal considering the level of homophobia that persists in the European football. Just this week, fans of the German Bayern Munich team displayed a homophobic banner, depicting player Mesut Özil with his pants down and a cannon pointed at his butt.

Nevertheless, English ex-footballer Joey Barton thinks that the European sport has made ”so much progress” against homophobia. And here in America, Major League Soccer has just announced a new player code of conduct that will be posted in all locker rooms directly addressing anti-gay discrimination and harassment.

  1. That's not 'soccer' — it is Gaelic football, which is an entirely different sport. And not exactly 'known' for homophobia

  2. Thanks for the comment. I'm correcting the story now. You learn something new every day!

  3. Of course everyone already knows about everyone, except the closet cases that don't even want to tell themselves. They are respecting their teammates and their privacy, or so we hope. The teammate comes out publicly when he's ready to do so. unfortunately, there are very few willing to do so, which argues that there is an enforced closet. who knows?.

  4. We have come so far, and yet we have a long way to go. I can't wait for the day when this is no longer news.

  10. Thanking girlfriends and boyfriends is being polite and appropriate.

It would have been inappropriate to just thank girlfriends.
That's why you don't hear any twittering dumb reaction from the crowd; they know that society, our friends, and our brothers have gay boyfriends and friends who are gay.

And yes, this is Gaelic Football; note the "GAA" on his shirt, it means Gaelic Athletic Association.......and it does not tolerate any discrimination and is embedded in every local community.
and no, it has nothing to do with soccer.

  11. Just a quick word in defense of all the NON-homophobic German soccer fans:

There was a rainbow Pride flag waving amongst the enormous Bayern Munich banners in the chanting section directly behind one of the goals throughout the same match where that homophobic naked butt Özil gun thing was displayed.

  12. Apparently, you can't take the "gay" out of "Gaelic."

  13. The story needs more editing, it still equates Gaelic football sith the European soccer leagues.

Gaelic football is an Irish game - the most similar game is Australian Rules football.
