Pro-LGBT Resolution Passed By Oxford, Mississippi City Council

Though the Mississippi house's Judiciary B Civil Subcommittee advanced their "religious freedom" bill yesterday, an exciting bit of news out of the Magnolia State this week indicates that on a town-by-town basis, LGBT citizens are beginning to be heard and respected.

MississippiWDAM reports:

Tonight Oxford, Mississippi unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the dignity and worth of all city residents - including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).  Oxford joins two other Mississippi cities - Starkville and Hattiesburg - which both passed similar resolutions earlier this year...

"Diversity is what made and continues to make this country amazing.  It strengthens and enhances the experiences of everyone, to understand that it is our differences from which we learn and make us stronger," said Alderman Jay Hughes.  "At a time when signals from some parts of the State seem to be focused on exclusion, I am absolutely honored and proud to be in a community that embraces inclusion of everyone, to make Oxford the great place that it is.  Tolerance and acceptance creates the strongest bonds between neighbors, and I am proud to be on the right side of history in reaffirming Oxford's long-standing commitment to that most fundamental principle."

HRC President Chad Griffin applauded the city council, arguing that the decision "moved Mississippi forward on the road to equality." The general public may be more forward-thinking than state legislation would suggest, too, with 2013 poll finding "that nearly 60 percent of Mississippians under the age of 30 support marriage equality, while  64 percent of residents back workplace non-discrimination protections for LGBT employees."

  1. I'm glad that this was finally posted. I sent the tip to Towleroad and JoeMyGod early yesterday morning. It's funny that bad news out of Ole Miss and Mississippi hits the web so fast your head will spin but good news crawls.

After Towleroad and JoeMyGod posted stories about Starkville and Hattiesburg, Mississippi passing resolutions, I and other Oxfordians and Ole Miss alumni mobilized to demand our beautiful home town follow suit. I saw the draft a few days ago but I didn't want to say anything until it actually passed. Well, it's now official and it's UNANIMOUS!

News out of Mississippi and Ole Miss is so seldom good I want to shout this from the roof tops.

At least for today I couldn't be more happy to be an Oxfordian!

  2. I would also like to point out that the resolution is comprehensive, covering not only sexual orientation but also gender identity and expression.

  3. @ "while 64 percent of residents back workplace non-discrimination protections for LGBT employees."

I always felt that there would less oposition to workplace protections for LGBT than to marriage equality among fundamentalist Christians.

  4. before anyone celebrates wide-spread tolerance in the old south, bear in mind that all three of the cities named in the article are university towns, islands of academia floating in the murky southern sea... nonetheless these developments are very good news and would have been impossible five years ago.

  5. UNOKHAN, you're right. It's not necessarily representative of the South universally but it does show that even the South is being penetrated; even in MISSISSIPPI. For people who aren't from Mississippi it's very hard to understand just how big a deal this is. And even though Oxford is more progressive than most of Mississippi it's still very conservative. Even I am stunned that this resolution passed unanimously. This is just more proof that we are winning on every front.
