Dustin Lance Black Responds After Alma Mater Rejects Him as Commencement Speaker Over Sex Photos

Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is speaking out after his alma mater, Pasadena City College, invited him to be PCC’s 2014 Commencement speaker, and then dropped him after the Board of Trustees was made aware of sexually explicit photos on the internet of Black having unprotected sex.

Writes the PCC Courier: Black

“With the porno professor and the sex scandals we’ve had on campus this last year, it just didn’t seem like the right time for Mr. Black to be the speaker,” Board President Anthony Fellow said. “We’ll be on the radio and on television. We just don’t want to give PCC a bad name.”

The college recently went through two scandals involving professor Hugo Schwyzer, the “porno professor” who admitted to sleeping with students, and journalism instructor Warren Swil, who admitted to showing nude photos of himself to a student.

The administration decided to go forward and invite a safer pick: Pasadena Director of Public Health Dr. Eric Walsh, who accepted and is confirmed to be the commencement speaker, according to Robert Bell, a commencement committee member and vice president of academic affairs and student services.

Black, who "confirmed the invitation, booked the international flights to get back to Southern California, canceled work, and turned down paid invitations" to speak at the ceremony wrote an open letter to the school in response to what he says are the school's attempts to "shame" him.

Writes Black, in part:

For too long now I’ve sat silent on this issue. That ends here and now and with this sentence: I did nothing wrong and I refuse to be shamed for this any longer.

In 2009 a group of people surreptitiously lifted images from my ex’s computer and shopped them around to gossip sites in a money making scheme. These were old images from a far simpler time in my life, a time before digital camera phones and Internet scandals. They were photos of me with a man I cared for, a man who shared my Mormon background, and who was also struggling with who he was versus where he came from. And yes, we were doing what gay men do when they love and trust each other, we were having sex. I have never lied about my sexuality. If you invade my privacy, this is what you will find. I have sex. It brings me joy, fosters intimacy and helps love grow. I hope anyone reading this can say the same for themselves and for their parents.

In 2010 I took the perpetrators of this theft to Federal court and Judge R. Gary Klausner ruled unequivocally that the defendants had indeed broken the law. The details of this case are readily available for anyone to read — including PCC’s leadership and Board of Trustees.

In the eyes of anyone who has seen the devastating effects this trespass has had on me personally, creatively and professionally over these many years, in the eyes of my mother and friends who have held me as I’ve cried, and under the blind scrutiny of the law of this land, I am the victim of this “scandal,” not the perpetrator.

With this cruel act, PCC’s Administration is punishing the victim. And I ask you this: If I was a heterosexual man or woman with this same painful injury in my past, would PCC’s Administration still be rescinding such an honor?

  2. That is an impeccable response. Amen indeed.

  3. Sorry Dustin, the school doesn't want students to be busy looking up and passing around sex photos of you while you're giving a speech. It's too distracting for a solemn day. Besides, how many young boys have you 'loved and cared' for? Lol I'm guessing quite a few.

  4. His personal life is his personal life, as long as consenting adults were involved. Everybody else should mind their own business.

  5. Have you seen the photos in question? For such a "simpler" time, there seems to be an awful lot of different camera angles employed in taking those photos. Was there a third person in the room documenting the sex? Or, did the duo keep getting out of bed to adjust the equipment? Seems like a lot of effort must have been put into creating these photos of a "simpler" time. As he says, "we were doing what gay men do". I guess by that statement, he means to imply that all gay men take photos of themselves having sex.

  6. rule #1 of homemade porn. No faces or tattoos visible.

  7. Why should you care if he take photos of his own sexual recreation? Stop taking his word out of context. By what all gay man do as in sexual relationship between two gay men. This is not about popularity contest. The fact of this story has no bearing on whether if you like him or hate him as a celebrity. Extract the bitterness from your own life before it cloud your judgement on anything and everything.

  10. I suspect his alma mater may be more concerned about the age of the men DLB likes in case a scandal breaks out.

His current teenaged lover is of course Tom Daley who was 18 when 38 year old DLB started dating him.

But what of all the other teenagers he has dated. There's nothing illegal about men in their late 30's dating teenagers over 18. So let's hope DLB ID checked all those teenagers he has been linked to.

DLB's incredibly sleazy and predatory reputation and his close friendship with Hollywood 'players' like Bryan Singer means that his alma mater may simply be exercising caution.

He is no victim. If you record yourself in this manner then it's hardly a shock it gets revealed. The Pamela Anderson scandal is almost 20 years olfd.

  11. @ANON, you sure seem to have spent quite a bit of time and effort in examining said photos.

@MARYM, "But what of all the other teenagers he has dated." What evidence do you have that he's dated anyone who isn't of legal age?
    All what other teenagers?

  12. He should post the photos, too, so we can decide for ourselves!

  13. "The Pamela Anderson scandal is almost 20 years olfd."

That "scandal" was because Pamela Anderson was seen as sexually desirable by a huge percentage of men.

  14. He didn't do anything that all of us haven't done. He's now a celebrity and that makes him vulnerable.

I understand PCC's decision in the context of the mess they have on their own hands, created by their own staff, but after having read DLB's letter, I would support his position completely.

And he's right. If a woman had been victimized in this way- it would evoke sympathy. Gay sex still makes the issue unpalatable.

  15. @PETE N SFO - while I agree that almost all humans have sex I personally would never document it via videos or photographs or take lewd pictures of myself for the purpose of soliciting sex. These photos were apparently taken in 2006 which means Dustin was around 30 so he can't blame youthful ignorance as an excuse.

Irresponsible actions can have consequences, epically if you want to be a role model and in the public light. I have very little empathy for Dustin as he made a poor decision as an adult and now must live with the embarrassment/consequences.

  16. I disagree. I don't see Paris Hilton or Kim Kardarsian getting invited to speak at graduations either. We need to stop borrowing from black racial handbook. Disagree with me? You are racist or homophobic. This madness needs to stop.

  18. American puritanism at its dippiest. They seriously think that the knowledge that people have sex will "give the college a bad name"? It sounds like they should have let Black speak, but made him wear a big scarlet A.

  19. Do you think this has anything to do with the pool parties he attended with the barely legal boy loving Bryan Singer?

    Posted by: Matt | Apr 18, 2014 9:58:14 AM

  20. @PETE N SFO - one last thing. Dustin wasn't victimized, there was no hidden camera, he intentionally participated in the video/pictures. While he probably never intended for this to get out, and the person who stole the video/images was wrong, he never should have made the amateur porn to begin with. By your logic Anthony Weiner was "victimized."

Rule of thumb to live by - don't do (or at the very least document) things that would embarrass you if it was shown to your mom, priest, colleagues, internet, etc.

  21. He's acting like someone sneaked into his house and took pics. I'm sorry, but even straight people who have photos/ videos leaked have a certain reputation from then on. He just needs to man up and deal with the consequences.

  24. @Demerol, no where in DLB statement does he utter the word homophobia. He states that it appears that PCC is punishing the victim of the crime, which is himself when his private pictures were stolen and then shopped around. I'm concerned that you read into that statement homophobia.

There is no analogous comparison between DLB and KK and PH. DLB has made movies, won awards, and been an activist for LGBT issues. Those other two have been famous because of their sex tapes.
