Jeremy Irvine to Star in Roland Emmerich's 'Stonewall' About the 1969 Gay Rights Uprising

Last year we reported that Independence Day director Roland Emmerich was planning a movie about the Stonewall riots, and plans are moving forward quickly.

Today, Deadline reports that War Horse star Jeremy Irvine has been cast to star in the film:

Scripted by Jon Robin Baitz, the film is about the June 28, 1969 police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, a mafia-owned bar that was a gathering place for gays and transgenders. It became the flashpoint for the gay rights movement, a galvanizing event that is considered a touchstone even today in the fight for equal rights for the gay and transgender population. Emmerich’s way in is to focus on a young man’s political awakening in the backdrop of those riots.

Emmerich plans to start production soon as he's also preparing an Independence Day sequel due to arrive in summer 2016.

  1. Sounds great, a film about the iconic Stonewall happening. But I really hope that it is made as a big screen movie as opposed to a second rate T.V. movie where they seem to push gay-themed films.

  2. White guy to star, of course!

  3. "gays and transgenders"? Not liking that description.

  4. I don't care that he's white, but couldn't they find an actual Gay man/women to star in this movie?

  5. @Jon Flores?

Are you being ignorant of stonewall history or just trans intolerant?

  6. A film by Roland Emmerich ? Ok so let's joke a bit: UltraThunderous music, spectacular special effects, overdescriptive & didactic dialogues and caricatural unidimensional characters... Interresting formula. Will se how it works with the subject.
Thanks to Emmerich for a film about Stonewall.

  7. See the 1995 film "Stonewall" starring Frederick Weller. The movie was fantastic, Mr. Weller was awesome and any new movie will have big shoes to fill to be better than that.

  8. Ryan, to follow your logic they really should be casting the lead from someone who was actually a part of the Stonewall riots back in 1969. This whole acting thing is just such pretend......

  9. Emmerich movies usually have lots of explosions:

He has destroyed the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building,
the Hollywood sign, Las Vegas, the Washington Monument, the Capitol (twice) and the White House (three times).

So, is he going to blow up Christopher Street?

  10. Why shouldn't he star in this? Good Lord some of you queens are hard to please.

  11. "Moving forward quickly"?

One year from "he's planning a movie" to there are rumors that he cast a role in it? That isn't really light speed in Hollywood.

  13. not quite the person I would expect to make a sensitive film about a historic event... maybe this will be an action-packed version of Stonewall co-starring Megan Fox

  14. 1969 was a long time ago. Maybe Ken Burns should make the movie.

  16. This movie is going to be soooooo white washed. Trans women are going to be all but erased as well I'm sure.

  17. The entire cast needs to be openly gay.

We constantly hear Hollywood whining about how dangerous it is for careers for actors to come out. Well for a movie like Stonewall they need to bite the bullet.

  18. I have to agree with MaryM: if ever there was a movie where the gay characters SHOULD be played by gay actors, this is it. Normally, it doesn't bother me when straight actors play gay, but the Stonewall Riots are so iconic to the queer community that there should definitely be an effort to cast the gay characters with gay actors.

I mean, if they're looking for an openly gay actor in Irvine's age range, there's Jonathan Groff, Michael Arden, Ben Whishaw, Scott Evans, Matt Dallas, Tom Lenk, Paul Iaconco, Wesley Taylor, and probably others I'm forgetting.

  19. PBS ran a pretty good documentary on the Stonewall riots a few years back. I enjoyed it very much and have since added it to my video collection.

  20. Gal Gadot it right...they already did this, WITH an openly gay actor of color in the lead, Guillermo Diaz, who is simply astonishing in the role. (Late in the movie, when he's briefly seen out of drag, I had a complete disconnect and thought "Who is that?", so complete is his performance as La Miranda.) And the supporting cast--Matty Dean and the staggeringly brilliant actor who plays Bostonia--are impeccable. I look forward to the new movie, especially the beautiful Jeremy Irvine, but it's got its work cut out for it to match the 90's "Stonewall" (or any of the Stonewall docs).
