Rep. Louie Gohmert Comments on the Benhams, Compares Gay Rights Advocates to Nazis: VIDEO

Gohmert

Rep. Louie Gohmert referenced the anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-Muslim Benham brothers ("people that were going to be on the television show before it was canceled") today in a speech on the House floor denouncing the "intolerance" of gay rights advocates (my transcript):

"People that stand up and say you know I agree with the majority of Americans, I agree with Moses and Jesus, that marriage is between a man and a woman. Now all of a sudden people like me are considered 'haters, hatemongers, evil' which really is exactly what we've seen throughout our history going back to the days of the Nazi takeover in Europe. They would call people 'haters' and 'evil' and build up disdain for those people who held those opinions or religious views, or religious heritage. And then next came 'well those people are so evil and hateful let's bring every book that they've written or has to do with them and let's start burning the books cause we can't tolerate their intolerance...It's called projecting. Someone that has a characteristic - to divert condemnation on themselves they project their characteristic on someone whom they disagree."

  1. But Louie you are a hater, it's written all over your face (and the crown of your head) as you say the word homosexual.

  2. Aww, how cute!

Someone taught the dumbest member of Congress how to say the word "projection"...!

The shamelessness of conservatives in the US is appalling, isn't it? They have reduced every aspect of civil society to an exchange of "I know you are, but what am I?!?"

Conservatives try to utilize deflection and, yes, projection to cover up their craven fear and stupidity-- and to cover up the fact that they are actually sociopaths. And Fascists.

I weep for our country. Yet again.

  3. Oh, jeez. Look at how oppressed this straight, white, cisgendered, Christian male is. How can he even stand to live with all of society against him.

  4. "Watching news and hearing how Christians are bullied by the gay agenda by creating a culture of intolerance and persecution of Christian beliefs. I was surprised as a Christian and waited to hear about the Christians who had been beaten for their beliefs, denied services, been kicked out of their home or town, been rounded up and imprisoned, been murdered, had anti-Christian laws passed making Christianity illegal in their state, had government deem Christianity invalid denying rights to Christians, had their children removed from their care, been involuntarily hospitalized to cure them, been involuntarily sterilized, been forced to worship in secret for fear of being targeted for above abuses, had their homes or businesses vandalized, but no mention of these horrors of persecution. None of the speakers had even had religious slurs shouted at them as they go about their day because they "appeared" Christian. What slur would even be yelled? "Hey! You dirty Chris"? Then I realized they didn't mean those things were happening to them....they meant they were persecuted because they can't openly condemn gays without society making them feel yucky and like a bigot."

  5. An elected member of your government just called you a Nazi because the Home and Garden channel decided to take a show off the air. Let that sink in.

    Imagine that. How self-aware.

  7. This man clearly has no idea that he is projecting his own hatred onto those he hates. How to deal with this? Try explaining exactly that to others, without calling him a hater. Do it clearly, without raised voice, and without condemnation. Do not jump on him, do not come to his level...call others to see this truth in support of who we really are.

  8. "It's called projecting."

Yes, you are projecting. The Nazis were Christians who went after gay people and other minorities. When the Nazis were later punished for their actions, they were not be bullied -- they were getting exactly what they deserved. The Benhams are hateful bigots and are seeing there are consequences for that hatred.

  12. As a Hebrew School graduate i can tell you Moses never said marriage was between one man and one woman. Almost all the Jewish forefathers—Abraham, David, etc.—had multiple wives, plus concubines.

Also, majority of Americans support marriage equality.

Is he being decietful or just dumb?

  16. And just below this story on Towleroad is some right wing scumbag talking about how "any team who chooses Michael Sam will face an immediate boycott from a national coalition of evangelical Christian leaders". But, its us gays who are the bullies and haters. Disgusting.

  17. So the butt boy twins have America's dumbest legislator in their corner. There was a day when stupidity and ignorance were things to be ashamed about.

  19. If only Louie were to glance at the post just below this regarding Michael Sam's possible draft to the NFL this week. Both sides are "guilty" of this. And by "guilty" I mean constitutionally protected by the first amendendment.

  20. All Right Wing Watch did was post transcripts and videos of the Benham boys echoing their dear Daddy's views. HGTV knew about those views before RWW's story - at least according to the boys - but knew once they became public it would hurt their brand. It's called the "free market." Deal with it.

  21. I guess it is official now. We are evil in the eyes of this *ssh*le called god. Hateful too, huh?

  22. ..This is so sad and typically reactionary. It is hard to determine however whether this Neanderthal is really pissed off or just using the "gay bullying" card to rile up his "base" ...maybe just filling the cricket sounds with something...anything....I would like to see him gone but his "base" will keep putting him in. THAT is the real tragedy. I also would like to hear him correctly cite the reference about marriage Jesus made about being being "between a man and a woman"...I don't recall that those were exact words, were they? In Louie's world it doesn't really matter though if the verse is not quite as he claims it is...and WTF Ho really cares!

  24. with his references to moses and jesus, gohmert demonstrates conclusively that he is very ignorant in matters biblical. at no point do either of those 2 prophets say anything about gay marriage, either in favor or against.

    Posted by: alguien | May 9, 2014 3:39:14 PM

  25. Mr. Gohmert, you are standing in the Capitol of the United States of America saying whatever it is you want to say to denigrate gay people: how are gays being intolerant toward you? Toward your right to express yourself. You could spout your drivel from any street corner in America, and no one will arrest you, or stop you, or prohibit you from doing so. But you do not have a right to express your opinions and expect others to NOT express THEIR opinions about your opinions.

You are a straight white man who assumes that you must be in control and must have the privileges that you sneer in your refusal to grant to others.
