Here is Video of Wilson HS Principal Pete Cahall Coming Out as Gay to His School: WATCH

2_cahall

Earlier today we reported that Principal Pete Cahall  at Wilson High School in D.C. shocked his students when he came out of the closet at a school Pride event.

StudentCahall was flanked Mayor Vincent C. Gray and David Catania, the D.C. Council’s first openly gay member.

Here's some great video of Cahall making the announcement, his hands shaking, then doubling over with relief as his students cheer and then rush the stage to give him hugs.

Cahall is 50 years old. He told ABC7 that he felt it would have been hypocritical for him to host a school Pride event while holding on to his secret, and that he found courage in the recent disclosures by NBA player Jason Collins and NFL player Michael Sam.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

  3. Great story, but I hate that the Westboro hate squad is able to squeeze itself into the news. The best thing to do with them is to totally ignore them. They feed on the media attention.

  4. You see the power in the next generation of fearless youth. They can inspire their teachers and parents to be fearless. Great story!

  10. Great story, and kudos to the Principal for stepping out of the shadows - hopefully we each get to do it at the time that is right for us.

I agree that the WBC is a clown car of hate, but there is something positive that comes from all of their venom. In location after location, the community at large, including many who dont see eye to eye on every issue, can come together to condemn their hateful rhetoric. WBC's intention of dividing people into "believer and non-believer" backfires every time and results in community cooperation.

  14. Hate to rain on the parade, but let's see how fast he gets fired. There will be parents freaking out.

  15. What an inspiring video -- the principal's courages, the students' response, the politician telling WBC to go to Hell...

  16. Not here in DC Michael, we have workplace protections. Our DC Residents may be taxed without representation in the US Congress, but we residents treat each other in a civilized manner.

  17. Inspiring all around!

@Michael: The parents won't be freaking out; they send their kids to a school that holds Pride events. Even if they were, you can't fire someone for coming out in DC. The archdiocese ain't in control.

  20. He will not be fired by his school district. This is D.C. Same Sex Marriage is legal in the District. Parents are, by and large, educated left leaning moderates. Kids don't give a crap about their principals bed partners. They just care if he is a good principal or not.
