Sean Patrick Maloney, the first openly gay congressman from New York, married Randy Florke, his partner of 22 years on Saturday in Cold Spring, NY.

Florke, a real estate and design executive, proposed in December after the youngest of their three children wrote to Santa wishing that her parents could be married.

Philipstown.info reports that the guests "included Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Minority Leader or Democratic Party chief in the House; Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the Democratic Party Whip or assistant House leader; and Rep. Joe Kennedy, another Democrat, from Massachusetts. However, Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, were not present."

In a statement, Maloney and Florke said:

“Even after 22 years together, we’re overwhelmed by how blessed we feel to celebrate this special day with our friends and family. With our three kids by our side, this couldn’t have been a more perfect day. Thank you to all our friends near and far for their love and support as we continue to fight to ensure all families can experience the joys of a lifetime commitment.”

Maloney, who represents the lower Hudson Valley region, is the second sitting member of Congress to legally marry his same-sex partner while in office.

  6. CD.... Don't feel so bad about your question..I'm not American and I had no clue who those people are. Without even reading the comments, it would look to me like these were their children. If they have been together that long, one of them could have had a adult son that age.

  7. now if we can just get him to caucus with the democrats he is supposed to be one of, instead of voting with republicans on all the key bills.

  8. @CD in DC: I assume that is Jesus, his adopted son, who was the grandson of the congressman's chauffeur and was adopted when his mother died. (As I type that, I can't help but hear the theme music: "Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum...")

  9. In wedding stories it is the common practice to report on who was in
ATTENDANCE rather than who was ABSENT at the nuptials.

Even though representative Maloney was a former aide to Bill Clinton way back when he was president, I find it unusual and maybe regrettable that Towleroad would quote THIS particular article on the wedding.

It was written by a Liz Schevtchuk Armstrong for the online newspaper the Philipstown.info and said quite PROMINENTLY that "Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, were not present."

Many other members of the media, of course did not say this, including USA Today, CBS, the Huffington Post, the Washington Post etc. The wedding was limited to the number of guests who could attend, so many notables sent congratulatory E-mails and twitters.

One cannot help but wonder what Liz Schevtchuk Armstrong who is a devout Catholic, said to be very conservative and has a MASTERS from the Catholic University of America feels about gays and gay marriage. (?)

  10. There are almost no dresses that I have liked, but I like those. Regular fashion people must love them.
