Brian Brown Says He and Other Anti-Gay Bigots ‘Won’t Go Away’ If Marriage Equality Goes Nationwide

Brian Brown

In an interview with ABC News, National Organization for Marriage president Brian Brown shared what outcome he wants like to see in the inevitable Supreme Court ruiling over same-sex marriage – as well as what his plan of action will be should the Court find a constitutional right to marriage equality.

ScotusBrown, in a telephone interview, said his best-case scenario hinged on a future ruling by the Supreme Court upholding the right of states to set their own marriage laws, rather than imposing same-sex marriage nationwide. Such a ruling would strengthen the position of the 31 states that currently ban gay marriage and might encourage grass-roots efforts in some of the other states to reimpose bans, Brown said.

"We'd put this back in the hands of the democratic process," Brown said. "We would have the people deciding for themselves."

If the Supreme Court ruled the other way, legalizing gay marriage nationwide, "We won't go away," Brown said.

He envisioned a resistance campaign comparable to that waged by the anti-abortion movement since the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision established a nationwide right to abortion.

"In the next year or so, we'll either have a massive victory at the Supreme Court, or we'll need to fight for 10, 20 years to undo the damage that the court has done," Brown said.

With that last point, I think our side might be thinking the same thing...

  1. Of course he "won't go away." He still needs to pretend he is doing something so that he can continue to collect a paycheck. Let's see what happens when that donor base dries up.

  2. The horse has left the barn. What can he do to "undo" the "damage"?

  3. What a legacy he'll leave...

  4. He makes a living of being a bigot, so not matter what, he'll keep his job.

  5. Good riddance as long as I'm not forced to read (here on Towleroad) about whatever these insignificant bigots do...

  6. Mark my words. He won't fight one MINUTE after he cashes his last paycheck. He's basically saying that he will fight on as long as they keep sending him money.

  7. he clearly can't stand his own family. why else would he be dedicating his life to being on the road trying to negatively impact the lives of families that actually love each other?

  9. Once the approval of gay people reaches 68-70% wait for the religious revelations. These people are dying and their ability to raise money is drying up as well. If it weren't for the Knights of Columbus, they'd be gone already.

  11. it will become legal nationally, and he will go away.

  12. "We would have the people deciding for themselves."

Yes, just like we did to abolish slavery, integrate schools, legalize interracial marriage, and gave women the right to vote.

  13. Is he threatening to block the offices of county clerks to try to prevent gay and lesbian couples from obtaining marriage licenses?

Will NOM-backed protesters stand outside county clerks offices and attempt to recruit gays and lesbians into ex-gay therapy clinics?

Will Brian Brown encourage lunatic conservatives to murder judges and pastors who in the performance of their official duties actually officiate at gay and lesbian weddings? Will they terrorize county clerks who issue licenses?

Will Brian Brown and NOM show up Westboro-like outside churches and other sites where marriages are being held, to remind everyone how much 'god' hates them?

Or is this fat-faced phukk just nervous he won't be able to land another gig with a half-million $ compensation package, and affirming his willingess to continue to take his fellow bigots' money?

  14. Brown and the other anti-gay haters desperately want equal marriage to become the next Roe v. Wade - a social issue that will generate enormous emotion and energy that they can continue to use to elect politicians and make $$. The problem is that marriage is not the same as abortion. Abortion is, at best, an unfortunate occurrence - at worst it's an absolute tragedy. No one invites people to share in their abortions and no one gets a gift for the occasion.

Weddings, on the other hand, are joyous affairs where large numbers of people come together in support, encouragement and love. And the interactions of the friends and family members continue long after the wedding ceremony. The people who support and care for couples in same-sex marriages are not going to be motivated to march against their loved ones in the same way, say, an anti-abortion protester would still be willing to fight against reproductive rights even after finding out a loved one terminated a pregnancy.

Good luck Brian, I can't wait to see the dozens you managed to scrounge up this week.

  15. Perhaps Brown can take up the cause of restoring colored drinking fountains.

  16. They are still in denial about having to get real jobs. NOM is funded by only a handful of donors. At some point even they will turn off the faucets.

  17. There are so many people who still don't know who he is, it won't matter when he goes away. History will forget him.

  21. Well, Brian, it's not like anyone else is going to hire you.
In ten years the Republican party will try to pretend they ever were against marriage equality.
And your children will be ashamed to be related to you - your just desserts.

  22. They really will, too - one of the most difficult things about becoming an older gay man will be watching people act like there was always marriage, and watch conservative gays vote against their best interests.

  25. No, bigots like him won't go away...just like you still have to clean you house because it will always get dirty like Brown's mind and you still have to weed your garden because weeds are as insidious as Brown and you need to mow your lawn because it will turn into a miserable jungle like Brown's thinking....soooo, go ahead and stick around-- society has enough weed killer to deal with this idiot.
