Opera Australia Dumps Star Soprano Tamar Iveri For Disgusting, Anti-Gay Facebook Remarks

Georgian singer Tamar Iveri (right), a soprano contracted to perform in Opera Australia's upcoming production of Otello, was released this weekend after posting anti-gay comments on her Facebook page. The post was framed as a letter to the Georgian president regarding the violence which occurred at a gay march in the capital of Tbilisi.

The Guardian reports:

“I was quite proud of the fact how Georgian society spat at the parade … Often, in certain cases, it is necessary to break jaws in order to be appreciated as a nation in the future, and to be taken into account seriously,” the post said. It was deleted following the recent backlash.

“Please, stop vigorous attempts to bring the west’s ‘faecal masses’ in the mentality of the people by means of propaganda.”

On Monday Opera Australia shared a Facebook post of its own, saying Iveri would not be performing the role of Desdemona in Otello.

“Opera Australia has reached agreement with Ms Iveri to immediately release her from her contract with the company,” it wrote.

“Opera Australia believes the views as stated to be unconscionable.”

Iveri now claims the post was written by her husband, stating that he has a "tough attitude towards gay people," and is "very religious." Her arguments seem not to have swayed anyone, as she has reportedly been dropped from a 2015 performance with a Belgian opera company as well.

The public response to Iveri's dismissal has been overwhelmingly positive.

  3. It's heartening to see that the last acceptable form of discrimination is slightly less acceptable.

  4. To frame "the west" as a less desirable option while profiting financially from your chosen involvement with a country with western ideals doesn't exactly make good sense, of course neither does using religion as a shield to denigrate both LGBT citizens and "the west" when you are attempting to have a career in opera.

  11. I like the directional for the photo of just Iveri: "Georgian singer Tamar Iveri (right)..." It would be even better if there were a Hereford cow on the left.

  12. Send her back to her native Georgia where she can milk cows and sing to them instead of the huge gay opera audiences all over the world.

  13. While we're at it, let's send back Anna Netrebko and Valery Gergiev. If they love Putin and his anti-gay, anti-human rights policies, and imperialism by stealth invasion of Ukraine so much, let them go back to Russia. Western audiences are ridiculous to support all these Russians and ex-Soviet Tamar Iveri types who laugh at us by making their fortunes in the western societies, but mock us, our democratic systems, and promote Russian supremacy instead.

  14. Go back to Georgia you whore, and sing for the rest of your life in Tbilisi where the people can applaud you for hating gay people.

  17. Well, that's how it's done. Fire their homophobic asses. Maybe know that Russian wench will think twice before she (or her husband) spouts off. I'm sure Georgia will welcome her as a national heroine. I'm sure our own right-wing bigots will have much to say about her "persecution" because she is a "devout christian".

  19. So, Ms. Iveri is saying that the post in question was not hers, yet her words were also taken out of context.

Kind of reminds me of post-World War II Germans who said they had no idea the Holocaust was occurring in their backyards, but they tried to stop it.

  21. So stupid. Who does she think still buys tickets to opera?

    Posted by: Daniel | Jun 24, 2014 11:13:51 AM

  22. In Russia you not buy opera... opera buys you.

  23. Apparently there is this phot in Russia and other countries that they have to get the respect of the world. That is the respect that they lost when they lost their empires. So now they think that they have to beat up people, actual physical violence in other words, to make people respect them once again.

It's a childish and immature response. Only an idiot thinks that respect comes from intimidation.

But even that's okay. If she truly believes intimidation and violence is the best way to earn respect that she just got a dose of her own medicine in the softglove. She was unceremoniously fired. So according to her own precepts, she should not respect Australia and their opera company.

Of course, she doesn't. Which just goes to prove can't believe person into respecting. But at least we can be on the right side of the argument.
