Texas GOP Cuts Anti-Gay Language from Platform, Replaces It with Support for ‘Ex-Gay’ Therapy

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Texas Republican Party has removed some anti-gay language from its platform and replaced it with language supported gay conversion therapy:

Gop_texasDelegates have stripped language from the party’s plank on homosexuality that says: “we affirm that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God.” However, delegates have inserted language that supports therapy or treatment to “escape from the homosexual lifestyle.”

“We recognize the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle. No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy.”

Note: This change drew some ire during testimony Thursday morning, with at least one delegate imploring the committee to return to the platform language about homosexuality tearing at the fabric of society.

I can’t rationalize anything other that blatant hate against gays for the support of this change when the American Psychiatric Association has condemned “psychiatric treatment, such as reparative or conversion therapy which is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her sexual homosexual orientation.” It states that, “Ethical practitioners refrain from attempts to change individuals’ sexual orientation.”

Meanwhile, God *still* hasn’t registered as a republican. Why, Lord, hath thou forsaken them; do they not do your bidding? Oh, they don’t? Well that explains it, then.

  3. JJ says

Huh. I would have thought “unchanging truths that have been ordained by God” would be the one part of the platform that would be pretty solid and safe from revision.

Good news, tomtallis! The entire country is now undergoing aversion therapy for the revolting lifestyle choice of Republicanism. It’ll take a little while, and won’t be successful in all cases, but results are looking very promising right now.

Worse than if they had kept their anti-gay slate in the platform. Ridiculous attempt to seem more “compassionate” or “gay-friendly”. It’s idiotic and it’s intellectually lazy. Reject.

  6. Profe Sancho Panza says

Sadly, this represents progress for them – a movement from homosexuality as moral wickedness, perversity, and depravity to homosexuality as curable medical condition. They’re only 60 or 70 years behind now.
