Michael Sam Survives First NFL-Mandated Roster Cut

Michael Sam, the first out gay player to be drafted into the NFL, made it past a critical cut in the St. Louis Rams’ roster yesterday, keeping alive hopes that he will make the team’s final lineup. AFP reports:

The Rams trimmed four players from the active roster to reach the NFL-required limit of 75 players by Tuesday, but another 22 players must be dropped by Saturday afternoon to create the final 53-man roster for the regular-season openers.

The Rams play their final pre-season game Thursday at Miami and will open the regular season at home against Minnesota on September 7.

Sam, a rookie from the nearby University of Missouri, is among eight defensive ends competing for up to six expected spots at the position. He ranks third on the right side depth chart but injuries could see the Rams keep more players than usual at the position as a precaution.

Though Sam has had a strong pre-season showing, notably sacking Johnny Manziel on Sunday, Sam’s biggest hurdle to landing a spot on the roster could be another rookie on the St. Louis bench this year, Ethan Westbrooks, who, according to Business Insider and Sports Illustrated, “is playing out of his mind” and “is the apparent frontrunner to take the final roster spot for a defensive lineman.”

The Rams' will announce the final team roster this Saturday.

  2. The Rams D-line is probably the hardest one in the NFL for Sam to make. The final spot is between him and one undrafted rookie that has a similar skillset but longer arms, reach, etc.

Sam has great numbers in the actual preseason games (3 sacks, 5 QB hits) so the good news is, if he doesn't make the Rams, he's very very likely to make another NFL roster. The final cutdown is Saturday so he will either stick wtih the Rams or get picked up after that. Players on the Week 1 roster have their salaries guaranteed for the whole season so it's possible someone wouldn't pick him up until after the first weekend, but Sam's salary is so low that probably doesn't come into play here.

There are plenty of teams that need a quality pass rusher and Michael Sam has been that in college and during the NFL preseason so far. He WILL play in the NFL this year.

  3. Hooray! I'm hoping for one big internet-live wedding at the end of the season. Or at least an engagement! :-)

  4. I wish he'd been drafted by a team with a less insane defensive lineup..

  5. Whatever happens, he's secured his place in sports and LGBT history. Hope he plays somewhere.

  8. I agree with the commenter above. He's already secured his place in LGBT history. Hope he goes far though solely on the merits of his talent.

  9. "he's secured his place in sports and LGBT history."

He's just out of college, not heading to the retirement home. I expect more from him, and he has the fire to do it.

  10. Quoting sports illustrated? Really?

    And @RANDY exactly.

I know some commenters mean well but I wish they knew more about football.

The guy is really good and much better the Westbrook.

Unfortunately, no other teams had the balls to pick him, so St Louis did. Still, I think it was a very good one for him to go to, the defensive vets there really like him and he has hang out with them in the evenings with Vito as well.

  11. He will be cut by the Rams and will probably be picked up another team. He will be a career backup (2nd or 3rd string) at best.
