The Gay Games 9 kicked off in Cleveland last night with thousands of people from all over the country and world gathering to take part in the LGBT-inclusive sporting event.

The opening ceremony featured appearances by former Olympian Greg Louganis and singer Lance Bass - as well as a surprise message from President Obama via video.

Said Obama, in part:

Screen Shot 2014-08-10 at 7.19.39 AM"Even since 2006, when the Games were last held in the United States, in my hometown of Chicago, we've come a long way in our commitment to the equal rights of LGBT people here and around the world...I know some of you have come from places where it requires courage, even defiance, to come out - sometimes at great personal risk. You should know that the United States stands with you and for your human rights, just as our athletes stand with you in these Games."

Check out Obama's full speech and video footage of the opening ceremony, AFTER THE JUMP...

The Gay Games will run until August 16.

  1. Very nice.

But I'm wondering if he brought this up during his visit with the president of Uganda

  2. R, the Secretary of State HAS brought it up to the president of Uganda.

  3. And yet 42% of Gays will still vote Republican....WTF???

  4. Great message! We're so lucky to have a president who recognizes the contributions of LGBT people.

@Rochon, just 22% of LGBT voters voted for Mitt Romney in 2012, not 42%. (Which, in my mind, is still far too high.)

  6. Rochon:
Rick spread this disinformation of 42%. He meant white gay voters. Even that is his "calculation" based on a lot of unsubstantiated assumptions.
GMB's figure is closer to the fact which comes from a Gallup poll.

  7. It is partly the reason why Democratic party is so supportive because LGBT votes can skew a tight election. Just as the religious votes can help the GOP.

  11. Been here two days so far, and for this small-town boy, the Opening Ceremony and the Games so far have been everything I could have hoped for a thousand times over. Bowled today, did decently (averaged 208, well under my tournament average), but didn't make top-12 to advance.

Saw Sen. Sherrod Brown and his wife, as well, and the standing ovation(s) they received, even before speaking, were some of the most moving moments I've ever experienced. They were *so* loud that it was almost deafening, and overall, the love I felt from everyone in the Q showed exactly just how far Ohio, as a state, and we, as a country and world, have come in just the past 10 years.

Ohio, and most especially the Cleveland/Akron/suburbs areas, has really rolled out the red carpet for us and it has been one of the most amazing two consecutive days I've lived.

  12. This is simply amazing, and President Obama truly has been the BEST U.S. President EVER for the LGBT community!

  13. Glad to hear it, Cody! I'm a Clevelander and am so glad the Games are here. Hope to see more of the events this week as my schedule permits! Good luck with yours! :)
