The Right Enemies: A Look Back at Right-Wing Attacks on Eric Holder

Holder resignation

BY LAYNE AMERIKANER

Attorney General Eric Holder, who this week announced his plans to resign, has been a leader in addressing systems of racial discrimination and protecting the fundamental rights of every American to be treated equally under the law and participate in our democracy.

Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that the Right loves to hate him.

Tim HuelskampIn February of this year, the American Family Association demanded Holder’s impeachment after he had the audacity to treat married same-sex couples like married opposite-sex couples with regard to a host of legal rights and recognitions. Shortly after, both Faith and Freedom Coalition head Ralph Reed and Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp [pictured right] echoed the call for Holder’s impeachment because of his support for marriage equality. Televangelist Pat Robertson also joined the impeachment parade, alleging that under Holder, “sodomy” was being “elevated above the rights of religious believers.”

Holder’s commitment to redressing racial injustice was no more warmly received by the Right than his work in support of LGBT equality. After Holder spoke out against voter ID laws, which disproportionately harm people of color, Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused him of “purposefully” “incit[ing] racial tension.” Gun Owners of America director Larry Pratt argued that Holder’s open discussion of racial discrimination in the criminal justice system means that he is the real “racist,” asserting last year that Holder wants to “intimidate the rest of the country so that we don’t think about defending ourselves” against “attacks by black mobs on white individuals.” Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association went so far as to say that Holder would never “prosecute someone if the victim is white.” And after Holder visited Ferguson, Missouri last month, David Horowitz outrageously commented that the attorney general was leading a black “lynch mob.”

And those are just a handful of the attacks the Right has leveled against Holder for his work protecting equality under the law.

The fact that the far Right has reacted with so much vitriol to the attorney general’s leadership is a sign not only of how uninterested they are in the civil rights that the Justice Department is meant to protect, but also of how effective Holder’s work has been. The next attorney general should share Holder’s deep commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans – and, by extension, make all the “right” enemies among those hoping to turn back the clock on civil liberties.

Bryan Fischer Says NFL 'Discriminated Against Every Heterosexual Player' By Signing Michael Sam: VIDEO

Fischer

American Family Association spokeshater Bryan Fischer, who has previously said that Michael Sam's sexual orientation is an "explosive device sitting under the floorboards of his life," is claiming the openly gay NFL player was only chosen by the Dallas Cowboys "because he's a homosexual."

Said Fischer:

What the NFL has done here is they have discriminated against every heterosexual football player that also got cut. They didn’t go to bat for those guys, they discriminated against everybody but Michael Sam.

Cowboys coach Jerry Jones has flatly denied suggestions that the NFL pressured the team to sign Sam.

Wingnut Bryan Fischer: Diversity Is Crippling The U.S. - VIDEO

Bryan fischer

Anti-gay activist Bryan Fischer has taken to the website for his hate group American Family Association to argue that diversity is crippling the U.S.

Fischer is well known for his virulent - and regular - homophobic views.  In recent weeks, he has said that all LGBT people should be banned from public office, that god is disgusted when he looks at gay sex, and that Burger King’s Proud Burger will be a disaster for for the company because people do not want to have to think of two men having sex when they sit down to eat a hamburger. Chelsea Manning

In his latest outburst, Fischer asserts that the U.S. became the greatest nation in the world because of “an unshakable commitment to common core values and standards” and that the acceptance of diversity “fractures, debilitates, and diffuses.”

Alluding to transitioning transgender wikileaker Chelsea Manning, he continues:

“The strength of our military has not been its diversity but its unity, indeed its uniformity. Soldiers wear the same uniform, not uniforms of their own imaginations. They serve one nation, not many, salute one flag, not many, and follow one commander-in-chief, not many.”

Not content with transphobia, he goes on to say that immigrants are only welcome in the U.S. “if they embrace [Christian] fundamental values and are willing to become Americans rather than hyphenated Americans.”

Of course, same-sex marriage - not very subtly linked with profanity, fidelity, murder and theft - is also out, in Fischer’s version of Christianity:

“We recognized the importance of language that was free from profanity. We recognized the importance of honoring parents. We affirmed the importance of marriage as the union of one man and one woman and stressed the importance of fidelity to the marriage covenant. We treated murder as a capital crime, punished theft, and punished perjury.”

Bryan Fischer's Latest Rant: 'God Will Use The Pagan Armies Of Allah To Discipline The U.S. For Our Debauchery' - WATCH

Bryanbeyonce

The American Family Association's reigning king of nonsense Bryan Fischer took to the airwaves with a new batch of offensive vitriol last week. Citing Sodom and Gommorah, "pagan armies," Israelites, and other Old Testament buzz words, Fischer worked to convince listeners that the United States would meet horrific ends at the hands of radical Islamic groups should our tolerance of "debauchery" continue. With the recent outburst of violence from ISIS, it seems that Fischer spotted a winning opportunity for religious and moral generalization.

Right Wing Watch reports:

Asserting that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah are "just like the Gay Gestapo is today" and that America is celebrating behavior that God calls an abomination while persecuting those who stand for God's values, Fischer warned that "God eventually is going to run out of patience with the United States."

And when that day comes, he said, God "will use pagan armies to discipline his people if they turn from him in rebellion and disobedience and descend into debauchery," pointing to the rise of ISIS to raise the possibility that "God will use the pagan armies of Allah to discipline the United States for our debauchery."

Bryan Fischer: Seeing Gay Sex Causes God (And Everyone Else) to 'Recoil From It In Some Kind of Disgust' - VIDEO

Fischer

American Family Association spokeshater Bryan Fischer, who seems to bring up gay sex more often than even the guys over at Men.com, spoke on his radio show yesterday about the revulsion that God must feel whenever he watches gay people have sex.

Said Fischer:

When God sees it, it causes him to recoil. And when we think about the actual act of homosexuality, we have exactly the same reaction. Most people think about that, they don't want to think about that, they don't want to visualize it because it is disgusting. And if people aren't politically conditioned to accept it, their natural reaction is that's just not normal, that's just not natural, that's not what human beings were designed for, that's not what they were made for.

Bryan Fischer: Gays Should Be Banned From Public Office - VIDEO

Bryan fischer

Wingnut Bryan Fischer, who heads the anti-gay organization American Family Association, has said that all gay people should be inherently disqualified from holding public office, reports Right Wing Watch.

Fischer used the controversy surrounding Texas Governor Rick Perry’s attempts to force Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign following her arrest for drunk driving to argue his point.

Referring to Lehmberg as an "open lesbian," he said that “somebody who is engaged in sexually deviant behavior is not qualified to hold public office.”

Fischer continued:

“If you get a conviction for rape, you can't hold public office. You get a conviction for pedophilia, you can't hold public office. You might even get run out of office on a prostitution charge because it's sexually deviant behavior. Now lesbianism is sexually deviant behavior because it deviates from God's plan and design for human sexually. So I believe that this is a person who, because she's involved in sexually deviant behavior, should be, ought to be disqualified from public service.”
