NEWS: Dick Cheney's Bad Heart, Derek K. Miller's Big Heart, James Cameron's Derring-do, And Rick Santorum

Towleroad-roadicon Rick Santorum wins Louisiana:

With around 60% of the vote in, Santorum held a nearly 2-1 lead over front-runner Mitt Romney. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had 19% of the vote and Texas Rep. Ron Paul had 6%.

Santorum's win was his fourth in the South, where front-runner Mitt Romney has not been able to connect with conservative voters in the region.

Winning Louisiana big will help fuel Santorum's campaign as the conservative alternative to Romney.

"Santorum can't just win, he has to win big. He's the one who needs to shake up this race. Another ho-hum win in the South doesn't cut it. He's on a political bridge to nowhere and is running out of time to change destinations," said Bruce Haynes, a GOP strategist and managing partner of Purple Strategies, a bipartisan public affairs consulting firm, last week.

The bones—a partial skull, skull cap, jaws and teeth—came from Longlin Cave in Guangxi Province and Malu Cave inYunnan Province, and date to  11,500 to 14,300 years ago. In comparing the Chinese bones with those of recent humans, H. sapiens living during the Pleistocene, Neanderthals and Homo erectus, the researchers concluded the Chinese fossils have a unique mix of modern features and traits rarely, if ever, seen in recent and Pleistocene humans, such as a very broad face and a protruding jaw.

The world, indeed the whole universe, is a beautiful, astonishing, wondrous place. There is always more to find out. I don't look back and regret anything, and I hope my family can find a way to do the same.

What is true is that I loved them. Lauren and Marina, as you mature and become yourselves over the years, know that I loved you and did my best to be a good father.

Airdrie, you were my best friend and my closest connection. I don't know what we'd have been like without each other, but I think the world would be a poorer place. I loved you deeply, I loved you, I loved you, I loved you.

Rachel Maddow Talks to Frank Rich About the Silent Hypocrisy of Pro-Gay Republican Power Players: VIDEO

Rich_maddow

Frank Rich sat down with Rachel Maddow last night to discuss why pro-gay Republican power players like Paul Singer and Dick Cheney (rumored to have lobbied behind the scenes for marraige equality in Maryland) - and gay Republicans like Ken Mehlman refuse to speak out and condemn the radical anti-gay platform of every single GOP candidate for President.

RichSays Rich:

"There's a complete disconnect. I guess it's just a kind of desperate, craven relationship to the base of that party. We now have a base of the Republican party that is so radical that they can be pandered to by calls for elimination of public education...the hypocrisy...someone like Ken Mehlman is in a long tradition, I hate to say it, of Republicans who were closeted homosexuals in power, actually enabling homophobic policies and in some cases the real demonization of gay people. And then as soon as they're away from it...then he comes out and does the right thing. Comes out as gay, but also comes out of those policies. But where was he when it really mattered within his own party?...There's a real pathological disconnect and they've really got to be called on it."

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

And here's Rich's latest article on marriage equality.

NEWS: Google Spies, Cheney Betrays, Preacher Molests, Spielberg Loses: VIDEO

EvilTowleroad-roadicon In a week, Google will begin to store records of all your Googlings. Here's how to clear your Google records before it happens.

Towleroad-roadicon The Family Research Council is angry with Dick Cheney for supporting marriage equality. Apparently his duty should be to them, not his daughter:

In 2000, Dick Cheney might have considered Philadelphia’s most famous son, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin’s own son was the royal Governor of New Jersey. It was a patronage job Ben had secured for him. When his son remained loyal to the Crown, Benjamin Franklin did not refuse to sign the Declaration of Independence citing a “personal situation.” That’s one of the many reasons why we remember Ben Franklin with admiration and respect.

Dick Cheney is said to be worth hundreds of millions. His family may not suffer the devastation that comes from the breakdown of marriage. But in his recent book, Coming Apart, Charles Murray shows how the loss of marriage for the white working class in America has already had catastrophic consequences. If we seek the reason behind the great disparities in wealth that the Occupy crowd is howling about, we need look no further than the collapse of marriage. In this great cultural clash, Dick Cheney has enlisted with the forces of dissolution.

Towleroad-roadicon Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire calls Obama the "inspiration" for Washington marriage equality:

"I think we probably have succeeded as much as we have because of his leadership. He's used the bully pulpit," Gregoire said at the White House Friday. "He's been the inspiration that allowed the state of Washington recognize that we need to have equality."

"It's because of what he's been able to do that I actually think in large part we were able to achieve what we did. So I don't criticize. To the contrary, I thank the president for his leadership on GLBT issues," she told reporters after a meeting between Obama and Democratic governors.

Towleroad-roadicon Once again, Rick Santorum's old utterances make news:

In remarks last year at the College of Saint Mary Magdalen in Warner, N.H., Santorum had told the crowd of J.F.K.’s famous 1960 address [on the separation of church and state] to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, “Earlier in my political career, I had the opportunity to read the speech, and I almost threw up. You should read the speech.”

Towleroad-roadicon Six simple animations explain the basics of critical thought.

Towleroad-roadicon Teller: What magicians and neuroscientists do and do npt have in common.

Towleroad-roadicon A preacher plead guilty to "lewd conduct" and "lewd molestation," and is no longer allowed to interact with minors. So the church where he preaches did the honorable thing: It banned kids.

Towleroad-roadicon Identified: The remains of the last unaccounted-for service member in Iraq. He was a translator:

The remains of Staff Sgt. Ahmed al-Taie, who was 41 when militiamen seized him on Oct. 23, 2006, were positively identified at the military's mortuary in Dover, Del., the Army said in a statement released Sunday. Army officials said they had no further details about the circumstances surrounding his death or the discovery of his remains.

Towleroad-roadicon (Reading this makes me remember a bone-chilling feature by George Packer about the difficulties faced by Iraqi translators during the war. Definitely one of last decade's best pieces of journalism. It was called "Betrayed." If you haven't read it, find it here.)

Towleroad-roadicon ... and if that depresses you, watch this full-screen, in HD if possible. Music, stars, and time. Beautiful.

Towleroad-roadicon It's Oscar night. Your favorite films probably aren't nominated. The Academy is often crazy. AFTER THE JUMP, watch Steven Spielberg learn he's been snubbed for Jaws.

Dick and Lynne Cheney Voice Support for Marriage Equality on 'The View': VIDEO

Cheneys

Barbara Walters asked Lynne Cheney what she thinks of gay marriage on The View today.

After explaining that her daughter Mary is partnered with Heather Poe, Cheney said, "I think that whatever Mary and Heather decide to do is up to Mary and Heather."

Nudged Walters, "So, you're not against gay marriage."

"That's right," said Cheney.

"Do you agree with that?" asked Joy Behar of the former Vice President.

"Yes," answered Cheney, dodging a follow-up on whether the issue should be federal law. "I think freedom means freedom for everybody and you ought to have the right to make whatever choice you want to make with respect to your own personal situation.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

Cheney has publicly supported marriage equality for more than two years now. In June 2009, at an appearance at the National Press Club, he said that he thought it should be handled on a state-by-state basis.
