Donald Trump to Have Republican National Convention Role

Leading birther Donald Trump will have a "surprise" role at the Republican National Convention, Politico reports:

TrumpTrump has generated some buzz with recent posts on Twitter saying he was planning a “big surprise” at the convention next week. But for the first time sources are confirming Republicans will indeed enlist Trump to be part of their opening day act.

Trump’s appearance will come on a day with a theme titled, “We Can Do Better,” which appears likely to amount to a coordinated attack on Obama’s time in office.

“We are going after Obama,” said Kyle Downey, a convention spokesman. “If he doesn’t want to talk about his failed record, we will. The American people expect and deserve better.”

Trump has also been an outspoken voice for denying gays equal rights.

New Obama Ad Reminds Voters Mitt Romney And Donald Trump Are Pals: VIDEO

Now, in news that is not about Chick-fil-A, though does involve some clucking: President Obama's reelection campaign today released a new ad attacking rival Mitt Romney.

Called "Stretch," the 30-second spot hits Romney on his own low tax rate and plans to raise taxes on the middle class. And, as BuzzFeed's Zeke Miller pointed out on Twitter, the commercial includes a shot of Romney walking in front of politically convenient friend and supporter Donald Trump's plane last May.

Christian Heinze at GOP 12 writes, "It was inevitable [that moment] would show up in an Obama ad. The optics are awful for Romney. Why did he let this happen?"

He goes on: "Letting yourself get off the plane while Trump's jet lingers in the background is like Kristen Stewart sending an apology email to Robert Pattinson with a file attached MeAndRupert.jpg."

Miss Pennsylvania USA Sheena Monnin Quits, Citing Rigged Pageant, Policy on Transgender Contestants: VIDEO

The reigning Miss Pennsylvania USA Sheena Monnin quit the organization this week over its acceptance of transgender contestants but then changed her excuse to charge the pageant with being rigged, E! Online reports:

MonninIn a transcript of the email said to be from Mommim and provided by the Miss Universe Organization, the 27-year-old from Cranberry, Penn., wrote that she refused to be "part of a pageant system that has so far and so completely removed itself from its foundational principles as to allow and support natural born males to compete in it. This goes against ever moral fiber of my being. I believe in integrity, high moral character, and fair play, none of which are part of this system any longer."

Monnin claims on Facebook that she saw a list with the top 5 contestants before the pageant.

The Miss USA Pageant released a statement:

"The Miss Universe Organization can confirm the resignation of the Pennsylvania title holder after she did not place in the Top 16 at the Miss USA pageant," the pageant purveyor said in a statement to E! News.

"In an email to state pageant organizers, she cited the Miss Universe Organization's policy regarding transgendered contestants, implemented two months ago, as the reason for her resignation. Today she has changed her story by publicly making false accusations claiming that the pageant was fixed, however the contestant she privately sourced as her reference has vehemently refuted her most recent claim. We are disappointed that she would attempt to steal the spotlight from Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island on her well-deserved Miss USA win."

On the Today Show, Donald Trump attacked Monnin and said he would sue her.

UPDATE: GLAAD and the National Center for Transgender Equality have responded to Monnin's resignation.

Said Mara Keisling, President of National Center for Transgender Equality: "As a trans person and a Pennsylvanian, I'm disappointed that the now former Miss Pennsylvania feels such bigotry toward trans people. She says she is upset about a lack of honesty and fair play in the contest, but the real lack of honesty may be her unwillingness to publicly express her apparent transphobia. There is also a real need for allowing honestly by trans women who are being their true selves.”

Said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick: “Sheena Monnin apparently decided to quit, rather than be aligned with an organization that treats all women as women. As more and more Americans get to know transgender people in their communities, in the workplace, and through the media, they are discovering the humanity that society has refused to acknowledge for so long. Monnin is out of touch with fair-minded Americans who believe that trans men and women are worthy of the same dignity, respect, and opportunity as all other men and women."

Rachel Maddow Laments Ongoing Birtherism 'Clap Trap:' VIDEO

MaddowTrumpBirther

Despite the release last year of the president's long-form birth certificate and all evidence to the contrary, some conservatives are still suggesting that Barack Obama was born outside of the United States. And one of the main characters fueling the rumors is of course Donald Trump, a Mitt Romney surrogate.

AFTER THE JUMP, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow argues that Romney's eerie silence on the matter is a way for him to tacitly and effectively help birthers like Trump smear the commander-in-chief.

Wolf Blitzer and Donald Trump Have it Out Over Trump's Birther Theory, Call Each Other 'Ridiculous': VIDEO

Trumpblitzer

In the must-watch clip of the day, Donald Trump and Wolf Blitzer haggle over the authenticity of Obama's birth certificate. Trump, who is hosting a Romney fundraiser tonight in Las Vegas, still refuses to believe that the Hawaii-authorized document is genuine, inspiring Blitzer to call him "ridiculous."

"No, you are. Let me tell you something. I think you sound ridiculous," Trump fires back, later choosing to take a shot at CNN, "You bring it up because you feel it's probably going to get a few people watching your station, which, unfortunately they're not doing."
